“Fair Trade” is an innovative market strategy that promotes fair labor practices and healthy, safe work environments through the production of food and other goods and ensures slave labor is not used to produce the goods. As consumers, referring to individuals as well as private and public entities such as the city council, we all have a responsibility to be aware of the impact that our consumption has on the communities that produce the goods we purchase. We consumers have a voluntary choice to make purchases of Fair Trade goods. The City of Houston has the opportunity to lead by example and present a model of social responsibility for other towns and cities to follow by declaring itself a Fair Trade City which will not promote, support, or purchase goods that utilize slave labor in their production. We would like the city council to agree that when purchasing goods for the City of Houston, they will commit to procuring local and Fair Trade products when those products are readily available, meet applicable city standards, are competitively priced, are of comparable quality, and procured in accordance with existing procurement policies. Additionally, we would like the City Council to consider working to ensure ongoing education, media exposure and commitment to Fair Trade, and encourage members of our community to use, sell or provide Fair Trade products whenever possible for the wellbeing of producers, consumers and the planet.
