Why This Is Important

Petition President Obama to create an independent, non-profit agency funded publically as well as privately, with the mandate to provide advocates or angels to mentor and help individuals in need, regardless of their mental health or whatever else status. Each person in need will be paired with a mentor/angel who has the resources and authority necessary to pull together whatever is needed to help that one person.

Create independent non-profit agencies to provide mentors/angels to the homeless

Dear President Obama

Current economic problems have exaserbated the already critical problems in homelessness. A lot of agency workers are mandated to look after their agency's interests, more than they are to look after the homeless person in need. It is bureaucracy understandably protecting the taxpayer's interest, but a vital opportunity is missed because those front line workers who are most able to decide how to help those in need, are NOT given the authority nor the mandate to do so.

Care providers also need the regulatory and oversight that are expected in the other sectors, to ensure services are delivered to those in need, and not just to pad the numbers at the end of each budget year.

A solution is to create an independent, non-profit agency funded publically as well as privately, with the mandate to provide advocates or angels to mentor and help individuals in need, regardless of their mental health or whatever else status. Each person in need will be paired with a mentor/angel who has the resources and authority necessary to pull together whatever is needed to help that one person.

Although this sounds like it may be financially outrageous, but in the long run, it will be more cost effective than the current programs that are helping but not helping. In fact, once the program achieves critical mass, it can be self-sustaining with each person achieving independence returning to help mentor/angel others. Paying it forward and financially contributing to the program.

The initial cost of setting up the agency can be minimal. The key to its success is the mandate to provide a few persons in need with the mentor/angel given all the necessary resources to help. The size of the program is easily scalable and will grow naturally on its own once started.

Please consider enacting executive orders to empower state governors to create these agencies.
