Today, 72 million children around the world, the majority of whom are girls, are denied the opportunity to go to school. Access to education is a right, not a privilege. Today's world requires that all citizens have a basic education. This is necessary for economic growth, combating terrorism, social stability and democracies that work for the people.
Ensuring educational opportunity is essential to defeating global terrorism. Education saves lives, lifts people of poverty, and gives them the opportunity to become productive members of their society.
Concerned Citizens Speak Out for Children Denied Education
Mr. President,
In 2009, you pledged to come to the Millennium Development Goal Summit in New York this September with a roadmap for each goal. We urge you, as you consider your plan for MDG #2 - "Achieve Universal Primary Education," by 2015 - to also remember your pledge in 2008 to establish a Global Fund for Education. Only through U.S. leadership on a new multilateral education initiative can we ensure that all 72 million children currently out of school gain access to a quality basic education.
