An urban food-producing rooftop garden at Columbia would become a place on campus to build community and satisfy an interest many students have in agriculture. Some of us grew up in places surrounded by farms and others are looking to re-connect with the land and the food that we eat. As economic conditions worsen, knowing where your food came from and how it was grown is an important part of social and environmental health. With a farm on campus, think of all the projects that could be done for class and through the arts and media! Green roofs are nothing new in Chicago as the country’s leader in green roofs, we have 2 at Columbia College. It’s great the roofs exist, but Columbia students have little-no access to these roofs. Wouldn’t it be great to grow edible and nourishing fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers on one of them? What about providing a new awesome hang out for between classes? Let’s do something about it and “create change”.
