COAL IS NOT CLEAN PETITION

COAL IS NOT CLEAN PETITION

The Issue

Tell Senator Reid to support a federal moratorium on new coal-fired power plants and work toward a green and sustainable energy policy.

Don't be blindsided by the slogan "Clean Coal" - coal mining remains the dirtiest and most destructive way of making energy. But the Coal industry has spent more than $45 million trying to convince the American people otherwise. Above ground, millions of acres across 36 states have been dynamited, torn and churned into bits by strip mining in the last 150 years. More than 104,000 miners in America have died in coal mines since 1900. Twice as many have died from black lung disease. Dangerous pollutants, including mercury, filter into our air and water. The injuries and deaths caused by overburdened coal trucks are innumerable.

In the face of these tragedies, the coal industry still wants to build more pollution-belching coal plants, and we cannot let that happen.

THE PETITION:

 Dear Senator Reid,

We have not forgotten the dirty realities of extracting coal from Earth. "Clean coal" is still a futuristic science: strip and underground coal mining remain the dirtiest and most destructive ways of making energy. We want a clear proposal for more practical investments such as solar energy, hydrogen fuel and home energy efficiency.

Congress has the power to stop dirty coal-fired, strip mining, and underground coal mining plants from being built. We want to keep President Obama's economic recovery plan clean and green and the government to work toward an environment-friendly and sustainable energy policy.
