City of Salford Council: Review the age restriction policy on Private hire Vehicles in Salford.

Salford Council has imposed a 7 year age restriction on Private Hire Vehicles in Salford. Once the car reaches 7 it will not be licensed regardless of whether the car is in excellent condition and could pass the stringent tests that they do each 6 months as opposed to your12 monthly MOT.

Salford Private Hire Association have proved through VOSA that Private Hire Vehicles have a better pass rate than the normal family saloon cars and that cars meet the current Euro Emission Standards.

The Association has acknowledged that they realise there is a need for better air quality and proposed that Salford accept, "Transport for London's" Policy which would mean that as long as the vehicle passed the stringent test, that a vehicle could stay as Private Hire until the age of 10 years.

Apparently what is good for Europe and London is not good enough for Salford and this was rejected. Salford Council still made the ruling of 7 years age restriction irrelevant of the facts put before them, they basically passed this purely because they can.                                                                                                                What this ruling means is, Financial Hardship will be forced on many Private Hire Drivers and some may face unemployment. Because of the extra cost to renew vehicles at an earlier date, eventually the costs will be passed to the fare paying passenger, YOU.
