Austin Peay State University, in Clarksville Tennessee has contracted with Chartwells, a food service industry, who has provided Chick-fil-a a space to promote their company's image and products.

Austin Peay State University’s mission statement states that the university achieves its goals by “promoting equal access, diversity, an appreciation of all cultures, and respect for all persons”. By continuing to support Chick-fil-a, the university is supporting organizations that work to undermine those goals.

Chick-fil-A, through its charitable division WinShape, gives millions of dollars to organizations that promote inequality, willful ignorance, and hate. One such organization is Eagle Forum; which is against women in the military, AIDS education, marriage equality, and the teaching of diversity and multiculturalism. Eagle Forum also proudly boasts its successful fight against legislation that would ensure the equality of women. Other organizations include Focus on the Family, which opposes sex education and hate-crime laws, and Exodus International, which advocates harmful and unproven “cures” for homosexuality.

In addition to Chick-fil-a’s support of hateful organizations, the company itself has a history of going against the ideals of equality and diversity. In 2002, a Muslim employee sued Chick-fil-a after being fired for allegedly refusing to take part in a Christian prayer. More recently, Chick-fil-a’s WinShape Foundation stated, “We do not accept homosexual couples”, confirming that the company does agree with the hateful, anti-gay rhetoric of the organizations it financially supports. The company also has a policy that requires potential franchise owners to disclose personal information about their families. Chick-fil-a has even been known to interview the children of these applicants to gauge their morality. In addition, employees may be fired for “sinful” behavior. These are the marks of a company that strives to eliminate, rather than embrace, workplace diversity.

We are asking Chartwells at APSU to not renew their contract with Chick-fil-a
