Bob Evans: Go Cage Free!

Bob Evans: Go Cage Free!

The Issue

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) recently asked restaurant chain Bob Evans to phase in cage-free eggs. The company has yet to adopt humane, healthy eggs.

In the United States, millions of hens are currently kept in battery cages -- cages so small the hens do not have room to spread their wings. They are kept in filthy conditions and do not receive veterinary care. Cage-free hens, on the other hand, are able to walk around, and they have two to three times the amount of space as those kept in cages.

Cage-free facilities not only improve the lives of hens, but also reduce public health risks; in fact, cage-free facilities have significantly lower rates of salmonella than cage facilities do.

Yet, Bob Evans refuses to adopt cage-free eggs. Competitors such as Denny's, Burger King, Hardee's and Carl's Jr. are already using cage-free eggs. In fact, according to Josh Balk, Director of Corporate Policy for the HSUS' farm animal protection campaign, Bob Evans "remains virtually the only major restaurant chain to continue to use only eggs from chickens given less space than a single piece of 8-by-10 paper in which to live their entire lives."

Sign this petition demanding that Bob Evans show its commitment to animals and the health of its consumers by adopting a 100 percent cage-free egg policy immediately.
