The embargo against Cuba has been in place since 1960 and for 50 years has failed to achieve what it set out to do: bring democracy to Cuba. But despite its failure, a revision of the embargo has yet to be brought to the Congress floor.

Not discussing it gets us nowhere. Whether you believe that changes in Cuba must come first before economic sanctions are lifted, or the opposite, that lifting economic sanctions will help to bring democracy to Cuba, new legislation that does fulfill its aims is needed.

For change, any change, to be brought to US-Cuban relations and the economics and politics of Cuba, a conversation must exist first. That is what this petition calls for.

Revise the Cuban Embargo

Greetings,

The United States embargo against Cuba has been in place since 1960. It was codified into law in 1992 as the Cuban Democracy Act, with the purpose of maintaining sanctions on Cuba until the Cuban government moves towards "democratization and greater respect for human rights." But 50 years later, the Communist Party of Cuba continues to rule.

The current embargo and policy against Cuba has not been successful in achieving its aims of democracy in Cuba. Moreover, Cubans face harsh economic and social conditions that are reinforced by the economic embargo. A new policy that accurately addresses the current situation is needed.

It is time to revise the embargo legislation against Cuba. It is necessary to engage all sides of the political spectrum in this conversation so that a new policy can be strongly supported.

For change, any change, to be brought to US-Cuban relations and the economics and politics of Cuba, a conversation must exist first. I call on you to start the conversation that is needed to have a policy towards Cuba that considers the current reality and actually works.

Sincerely,

[Your name]
