Bring back the Homestead Act to end Homelessness by enabling people to build their own lives, homes and existence on the unused land throughout this country.
Homestead Act
Dear Representative,
It's been over 20 years since the last allowed homestead. All we have left now is the contentious legal method of Adverse Posession ("squatting") which is unacceptable when there are vast unused resources in this country that should belong to those who need them, particularly the poor and disenfranchised.
The homestead act as it stood was abused by wealthy, foreign interests grabbing up landholdings in the US. A new Homestead Act must be designed to benefit American citizens who are in most desperate need. A new Homestead Act should require a number of family generations as US Citizens and a maximum income/asset limit to prevent the abuse of wealthy or foreign interests. We should all be entitled to our "40 acres and a mule," particularly those of us who have been robbed and disenfranchised by the older generation throughout the 1970s, 80s, 90's and on.
It is no coincidence that the homeless rate has skyrocketted since the last Homestead Act (Alaska)was repealed. If you cannot occupy and convert unused land for your home and your subsistance, what choice is there but to live in the city slums?
No one is talking about the Homestead option - but it's time is now, again.
