With today's increasing medical costs and the lack of health coverage many people suffer, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas should allow same-sex partner benefits in their small group coverage, just as they do in large group coverage. Denying coverage to certain groups, but allowing it for others is unfair, and can have catastrophic consequences for the uninsured.

It's clear that a company like BCBS of Texas is discriminating when it excludes certain groups from their health coverage benefits, but allows them in other circumstances. A representative of BCBS of Texas stated that unmarried partner benefits are not available in their small group plans.

Tell Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas to allow fair coverage for all their insured, not just select groups.

We, the undersigned, urge you to start allowing benefit coverage in your small group classification to partners of same-sex couples.

It is disturbing to discover that your large group coverage allows for these benefits, yet your small group coverage does not. Your members in small group coverage, that are employed mostly by small business owners, are more likely to feel the necessity for this coverage. It would be paid for by the member just the same as a married individual pays for their spouse and children.

Your policy of not offering this coverage in your small group category is discriminatory and unfair. Today's political and economic climate makes it even more so for LGBT couples.
