For many people who are without a home in Los Angeles, renting a public storage unit offers a private and low-cost shelter, especially when faced with the limitations and risks of overcrowded shelters or the streets.  But these storage containers are clearly not designed for housing and we must find safe, affordable alternatives to those who seek refuge there.

Lacking running water, proper insulation and a variety of other hospitable amenities, the cramped quarters are far from ideal living conditions, not to mention illegal. Hiding in the shadows and fearing discovery robs those individuals of a dignity they deserve. And while they may be able to avoid some of the dangers of the outside world, without plumbing, heating, proper ventilation, or fire safety measures, the containers present their own health hazards.

The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority should partner with local homeless advocacy groups to intervene and help find some other form of temporary shelter or affordable housing for those individuals and families who are currently residing in storage units.

Help Find Safe, Affordable Housing Alternatives To Storage Units

Dear Mr. Arnold,

For many people who are homeless in Los Angeles, renting a public storage unit offers a private and low-cost shelter, especially when faced with the limitations and risks of overcrowded shelters or the streets. But these storage containers are clearly not designed for housing and we would like to see Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority to assist in finding affordable alternatives to those who seek refuge there.

Lacking running water, proper insulation and a variety of other hospitable amenities, the cramped quarters are far from ideal living conditions, not to mention illegal. Hiding in the shadows and fearing discovery, robs those individuals of a dignity they deserve. And while they may be able to avoid some of the dangers of living on the streets, without plumbing, heating, proper ventilation, or fire safety measures, the containers present their own health hazards.

We urge the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority to take decisive steps to intervene and help find some other form of temporary shelter or affordable housing for those individuals and families who are currently residing in storage units.
