As an American, I Oppose Terry Jones' Quran Burning And Anti-Islam Hate Speech
The Issue
Evangelical leader Terry Jones plans to burn the Quran in Florida on September 11, 2010. He plans to go forward with this action despite its hate and likely harm.
Despite General Petraeus' entreaties that he stop it, "Images of the burning of a Quran would undoubtedly be used by extremists in Afghanistan - and around the world - to inflame public opinion and incite violence," Petraeus said.
Despite White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs today echoing Gen. David Petraeus' concerns about plans by a Florida minister to host an "International Burn a Koran Day" to protest the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
"As [Petraeus] said, it puts our troops in harm's way," Gibbs told reporters Tuesday. "And obviously [anything] that puts our troops in harm's way would be a concern to this administration."
Terry Jones was denied a permit for this event, and has distributed products that proclaim "Islam is of the Devil."
Despite protests in Afghanistan over Jones' plans, where civilians and troops are in harm's way.
We hope that Jones and his followers/supporters will see the error and potential harm of their ways. We hope they find peace and openness. We hope they decide to not burn the Quran or continue their hate speech. In the event that Jones and his followers/supporters do not, and do go ahead with their plan to burn the Quran and continue their hate speech and incitement to hate and potentially cause harm to Muslims, we divorce ourselves completely from such action, opinion, and speech.
We the people hereby state that...
* Terry Jones does not speak for us.
* We believe in the basis of our great nation, the Constitution, and as patriotic Americans, we believe absolutely in freedom of religion and freedom from religious persecution.
* We absolutely and completely oppose any plans to burn the Quran and malign a religion.
* We oppose actions such as this one that are based in hate that will likely incite violence and put our brave troops, whom we support and appreciate, in harm's way.
* We disassociate ourselves from this action, absolutely, and disavow any support of Jones' planned act.
We do not request action with this petition. We wish merely to express our values, ethics and opinion, and let the world know that Jones is a vocal minority who does not speak for our great nation or us, its citizens. We sign this petition to support the statements therein, and to express our respect for the right to worship as one believes, free from harm and fear, especially in the United States of America.
