One of the key progressive victories last year was swipe fee reform, also known as the Durbin amendment. This reform limits the amount the big banks and credit card companies can charge businesses per debit card swipe and ensures that fees are "reasonable and proportional" to costs.
Well, the big banks have joined with Tea Party Republicans to try and gut swipe fee reform. They want to make sure that there is a limitless supply of cash coming from Main Street, and won't stop until they've scared every Member of Congress into voting their way. Delaying and derailing swipe fee reform is bad for consumers and bad for small business, but good for big banks and credit card companies.
We can’t let this happen. This is the first step in unraveling financial reform which holds Wall Street accountable.
Tell your Senators to stand firm on Swipe Fee reform!
Swipe Fee Reform
Dear Senator,
I’m asking you to stand firm for swipe fee reform. There are efforts in the Senate to gut this important reform, and I hope you will stand strong in support of consumer and small business owners .
The swipe fee reforms, also known as the Durbin Amendment, are good for consumers and good for small businesses. Reckless credit card companies should not be fixing their rates and charging exorbitant fees to small businesses for processing card swipes. The big banks complain the swipe fee reforms distorts the market, yet they refuse to offer competitive fees. Just ask the Department of Justice, who has been involved in anti-trust suits with Visa and MasterCard for years.
This issue may not receive the most attention, but it is important. It’s important to every small business owner and entrepreneur. It’s important to consumers who pay more across the board because of these greedy fees. And It’s important to your constituents.
So I ask, please help us preserve swipe fee reform.
