What would happen if a Gulf Coast-sized oil spill took place off the shores of Alaska?
The state of Alaska is opposing a plan to designate 187,000 acres of critical habitat for polar bears - land that would protect nearly the entire range of habitat for every polar bear in Alaska, but which interferes with the interests of Big Oil.
It's up to us to make them change their minds.
Polar Bears Need Your Protection
Commissioner Denby:
I am deeply troubled by your department's decision to oppose the expansion of critical habitat for polar bears in Alaska. As you no doubt know, polar bears are a threatened species, and U.S. government experts predict that as much as two-thirds of the global polar bear population could be gone by the year 2050.
An even more timely concern is the impact that a disaster like the one we're seeing in the Gulf of Mexico could have on Alaska's polar bear population. The risk to polar bears in Alaska is simply not worth it.
I hope you'll reconsider this irresponsible opposition and lend your efforts to protecting polar bears in your state.
