The Affordable Care Act (ACA) gives the public a chance at reining in health insurance premiums. But we’re going to have to wrestle with the insurance industry every step of the way. The law says they have to spend at least 85% of our premiums on health care (the "Medical Loss Ratio")- not administrative waste and executive bonuses. The insurance industry says it will game the system by marketing flimsy disease management programs that masquerade as clinical treatments, and raising premiums. WellPoint has already ‘reclassified’ more than half a billion dollars of administrative expenses as medical expenses, and a leading industry analyst recently released a report explaining how the new law gives for-profit insurers a powerful new incentive to shift their previously identified administrative expenses. Sen. Rockefeller and HHS Secretary Sebelius have been fighting for fair and strong regulations - we need to ask them to keep fighting!
Keep Fighting For Affordable Premiums
Greetings,
We passed health reform, but we know the fight for affordable health insurance goes on. Please keep fighting for strong regulations that will hold the insurance industry accountablle, including through fair standards for the Medical Loss Ratio. I know the National Association of Insurance Commissioners plans to make their recommendations soon. Please be sure the final rules will benefit people like me - I need affordable health care! Thanks for being on my side!
