Addison Lanham of Gaston County resided in a hotel with her mother Shanna Lanham and Shannon Lanham's boyfriend who failed to register as a sex offender Jason Wells. On July 21,2011 Addison Lanham passed away an autopsy showed that Addison had a broken leg, a split to her private part which the mom Shanna Lanham alleged that Addison was injured in the bathtub. Shanna refused to seek much needed medical attention for her daughter. Addison's leg was broken for three weeks before she died and the child received no medical attention for either injury. Addison developed MRSA -Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is caused by a strain of staph bacteria that's become resistant to the antibiotics commonly used to treat ordinary staph infections. Relatives of Addison and Shanna Lanham reported to the Gaston County Department of Social Services six times that Addison was being neglected and abused and lived with a sex offender, The Gaston County Department of Social Services, failed to investigate or intervene before Addison's untimely death. I would like to introduce you Addison's law. Addison's law will make it a felony if a parent or caregiver does not seek medical attention for a an injured or ill child within 24 hours of the onset of a known illness or injury. Additionally under Addison's law if a sex offenders fails to register in the county they reside in the sex offender will automatically receive no less than a 25 year sentence in prison. If Addison's law is adopted, a parent that does not seek medical attention for a sick or injured child within a timely 24 hour time frame will be charged as a felon and can be sentenced to a maximum 3 years in prison. I strongly feel adopting Addison's law will prevent children from additional suffering from an illness or injury as a result of a parents poor decision. Adopting Addison's law and enforcing Addison's law will certainly help prevent this tragedy from happening to another child. I call on lawmakers to please adopt Addison's law. Too many children are dying at the hands of a parent or caregiver as a result of neglect and abuse in our country, adopting Addison's law is a positive step toward protecting children from neglect and abuse. Abuse and neglect toward children has become a fast spreading epidemic in our country and its time to create laws that provide more protection for children and harsher punishments for neglectful and abusive parents.
