Acknowledge Cold War Space Race Heroes Now.
The Issue
North American Aviation Space & Information Division Rocketdyne personnel of Santa Susana Field Laboratory Areas I, II & III were Dept. of Energy (DOE) Contracted workers excluded from EEOICPA in error. Information unavailable at EEOICPA's enactment details DOE's presence in Areas I, II & III in the course of waste transport, storage & disposal, which put these workers at risk. The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC, DOE's predecessor agency) operated numerous experimental, power producing nuclear reactors at SSFL that were not housed in regulatory containment structures; radionuclides were vented to the atmosphere regularly, about which workers were not warned. Situated outdoors at rocket engine test stands, these workers were exposed to radiation and toxic chemicals without their knowledge or consent. More information about Rocketdyne's contributions to space-nuclear applications during the Cold War is now available. We ask Congress to review new information thoroughly, and include these unsung heroes in EEOICPA legislation.
