Why This Is Important

On November 12, the Maryland Commission on Capital Punishment voted 13-7 to recommend abolishing the state's death penalty. Gov. Martin O'Malley opposes capital punishment and would support a bill to end executions in Maryland.

Last year, such a bill died in the divided Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee. Republican State Senator Alex X. Mooney could be a swing vote on the committee. Please sign the petition to tell Sen. Mooney that you abolishing the death penalty in Maryland.

You Can End Capital Punishment in Maryland

Dear Senator Mooney,

As you know, the Maryland Commission on Capital Punishment voted 13-7 on November 12 to recommend abolishing the state's death penalty. I oppose capital punishment and I strongly urge you to support efforts in the state Senate in 2009 to act on the panel's advice.

As the commission noted, the death penalty is costly, it is applied disproportionately to Americans without means for private defense lawyers and the chance of executing an innocent person is extremely high. Research has also found that the death penalty does not deter crime.

For these reasons, public opinon has shifted strongly in recent years against the death penalty. Maryland is a leader in the nation and now has an opportunity to make a real difference on the issue of capital punishment. Please take a stand next year to end this cruel - and ineffective - punishment in Maryland.
