A Twofer: Patch the Ozone Hole and Take Climate Action

A Twofer: Patch the Ozone Hole and Take Climate Action
The Issue
The Montreal Protocol, the treaty to ban CFCs and heal the ozone layer, is billed as one of the most successful international environmental agreements to date. Scientists predict that in a few decades the ozone hole will be completely gone.
There's just one problem. The replacements for CFCs (they are called HFCs) don't harm the ozone layer, but they do harm the climate. One molecule warms the planet up to 11,000 times more than one molecule of carbon dioxide. What's worse, use is expected to skyrocket as developing countries fully adopt the CFC ban.
There is a completely realistic solution. The Montreal Protocol-signing nations, 196 of them, will meet this November to consider a proposal to phase out HFC replacements because of their climate effects. Already, there are chemical substitutes that don't harm the ozone layer or warm the climate. Companies such as Ben & Jerry's, Coca Cola, and General Motors are already using them in their refrigeration units and air conditioners.
Please sign this letter to tell the U.N. Ozone Secretariat that you support the proposal to take fast action to slow climate change, and hope to see it pass this fall.
