This petition is in protest of the new $125 million Marine Transfer Station (MTS) for garbage truck-to-barge transfer at East 91st Street. A marine transfer station does not belong in a residential neighborhood - here or anywhere. It's time to come up with a real plan that works.
This neighborhood is home to a diverse community centered around two recently opened schools; Yorkville Community School (PS 151) and East Side Middle School (MS 114), and Asphalt Green a not-for-profit organization dedicated to assisting individuals of all ages and backgrounds achieve better health. The athletic complex is situated on a 5½-acre campus and is one of New York City’s most valuable resources. It is unconscionable that the city would consider building a garbage dump in the middle of all of this. The health consequences for our children and community would be immeasurable as would the financial impact on this growing neighborhood.
A garbage dump does not belong in a residential neighborhood. Here or anywhere. Please act now and consider alternative sites in more industrial areas or alternative plans for rail transfer. Do not allow political posturing to destroy this neighborhood and growing school district.
