Pandoras Aquarium

Mission

The mission of Pandora's Aquarium is to provide information, facilitate peer support, and offer assistance to male and female survivor of sexual violence and their friends and family. As part of its mission, Pandora's Aquarium also combats sexual violence by increasing public awareness, conducting research as well as providing and supporting violence education and prevention programs.

Programs

1) Message Board: The core of the online support community is the message board. Since its inception, more than 10,000 users have registered accounts, and registrations continue to grow. The message board consists of approximately fifty discussion forums. Using the message board, survivors can participate in organized healing discussion, blog, and post about struggles and triumphs. The board also hosts forums for women, men, teens, and older survivors as well as forums for issues like pursuing legal action, self-injury, eating disorders, and pregnancy after rape.

2) Weblogs: Members of the message board have the opportunity to create weblogs (blogs). Using their blogs, members can journal about their daily struggles and triumphs.

3) Chat Room: A popular feature of the website is the chat room, where victims of sex crimes can discuss healing related issues in a safe and supportive atmosphere. It is moderated by a staff of twelve trained volunteers. Each staff member facilitates a chat about a healing related topic once a month.

4) Guest Speakers: Quarterly, the chat room hosts guest speakers to talk to members and field questions about their area of expertise. Speakers have included healing inspirations, authors, and activists.

5) Lending Library: Pandora's Aquarium supports a lending library of materials about sexual assault. It is available free of charge to suvivors, supporters, educators, researchers and therapists.

6)Retreats: Pandora's Aquarium, Inc. will host its first recovery-oriented retreat in fall of 2009. The weekend promises to be healing for the 35 survivors who will benefit from programming that includes yoga, group work, and confidence building.
