Save the new Ecce Homo

Cultural officials in Spain are planning to undo Cecilia Gilmenez' radical reworking of Elias Garcia Martinez' clichéd fresco in the Sanctuary of Mercy Church near Zaragoza. We feel this is a huge mistake, as the new work is a cultural treasure and should be preserved. We call on Juan Maria Ojeda and the other Zaragoza city councillors to recognise the new version for the masterpiece it is and take all possible steps to maintain it. Because such a melange of true love, dedication, ignorance and sheer incompetence should never be forgotten.

I believe the work of Cecilia Gimenez is a stylistically interesting take on a religious theme, quite reminiscent of Naïve art, and that it possesses a strong expressivity. While it is a shame that the work of an artist was lost in the process (and cases like these should still be avoided as much as possible), we should not be too hasty. The true value of this disastrous restoration lies not solely in Cecilia Gimenez's striking, although touching, incometence, though. The fact that this incompetence could have been displayed publicly, without anyone being the wiser until the last moment (in a day and age where information travels the world in seconds, and social networks threaten the very concept of private life), could arguably be called a miracle (or a disaster, as the two share the unpredictability) and should not be forgotten. This work of art is a cute manifestation of a single person's slightly misguided enthusiasm and faith, but it is also (along with the following and mixed reactions it recieved) a singularity and a sign of our times, and we should think twice before erasing it, as the people who want to do so don't simply want to restore the original fresco, but erase the memory of what has been accomplished here.
