Be more transparent about safety concerns in immediate off-campus areas

During week of January 28, 2013, there were two separate shootings within a mile of Xavier's campus. Despite the fact that shots could be heard from campus and students requested information, the Xavier Administration never communicated to students, faculty, or staff regarding these incidents. Though it may not be an imminent threat to those on campus, the more information provided to the Xavier Community, the safer we can be.

This is not the first time this has happened, and it will not be the last. With more information, the entire Xavier community can better avoid potential threats. With faster and relevant communication from Xavier to our community, we can all feel safer and more supported by the University.

Sign this petition to show that you want to be more informed so that we can take the support to the administration of Xavier University and enact this change!

Feel free to email Student Body President Seth Walsh (walshs1@xavier.edu) with any questions or comments.

I live very close to where these events have been taking place. I even heard one of the shootings that took place because it was so close. I am very disappointed in Xavier's lack concern for the student's safety and awareness of what is going on around campus. I really hope they see the need for change like we do.

Many of the Jesuit Universities are not in the best neighborhoods. Xavier is one of the few Jesuit campuses that is not fenced in. The best way to keep students safe and prevent fencing in our campus from the surrounding neighborhoods is to have open communication between the administration and the students and to have a stronger security or police presence on campus.

Safety, as always, is one of the most important priorities that we can pursue. Xavier has a reputation for being in a bad neighborhood, which may affect recruiting. I think that anything the University can do to ensure the safety of students and to combat this reputation is a top priority. I strongly support this petition.
