WHITE, BLACK & NEGRO to DOESNT describe RACE on US Census/ Recognize HISPANICS/LATINOS as RACE.

Using WHITE, BLACK or NEGRO on US Census and EEO Forms as racial categories continues to permeate the cycle of segregation and doesn't accurately describe citizens in the United States that may be of European descent or Ethnically Mixed backgrounds. If we eliminate generic descriptions of COLOR and allow citizens the opportunity to describe their own identity based upon NATIONALITY/ORIGIN it’ll be a step in truly undoing institutional racism in America.  We're also advocating for US Census to recognize Hispanics/Latinos as a RACE on the census NOT just a ethnic group.

Reasons to support petition:

1.  It’s simple and clear…the word COLOR was removed from the US Census in 1980 however they are still using color to identify people
2.  We want the government to be consistent…use origin for everyone (White, Black)
3.  Remove NEGRO as its definition is for Black/Indian or Black/White race (descent)
4.  We want the government to recognize the original peoples of US States…people of Spanish descent (Hispanic/Latinos) as a race
5.  We want people to realize that the US Census is an important tool used to set the tone for the social and political structure of America

Wow, hosted community forum on racism and guess who show's up when nobody is here...Waco Trib! LOL just as I was going to cancel due to weather Sandra from Waco Trib shows up to do opinion editorial....all I can think is I hope she doesnt take this instance and flip toward negative light. What's great is we talked for an hour and additional participants showed up to join the conversation on 'thinking beyond color'. Tonight was so enlightening and reignited my passion with moving forward in holding these forums regularly. I'm headed to Springfield, MA this weekend to host a forum with Basilica. However, if you'd like to host a forum please inbox me and I'd be more than happy to facilitate. If you have at least 5 people to join conversation let's do it! It's informative with great discussion regarding racism and us census.

HOT TOPIC: Who are you beyond color? Do you know? It's funny how we become to accustomed to being labeled by a color that we've forgotten where we come from and who we really are. If suddenly the description WHITE, BLACK or NEGRO was eliminated from the human vocabulary 'who would you be?'. Most people can't answer that question. WHY? Tonight we're going to discuss our petition to change the US Census race section. We want to be defined by origin/nationality NOT color. What do you want? Is this even important or relevant? We want to hear from you!!!! Chime in on FACEBOOK, TWITTER or call.

      Day 15: Something is happening...
This scripture keeps coming to mind Zec. 4:10 "For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice..." This journey of finding our identity beyond color has morphed into a movement of enlightenment for many. I posed the question 'when you know the truth what do you do with it?' But the real question is 'do you want to know the truth?'. Thanks Ken Carter for hosting our forum and Shavonne Natey for your rendition of Strange Fruit. Let's make history by changing US Census! Step by step we'll be having these 'courageous conversations' all over the US.

Hello everyone, so we are almost 2 wks into this campaign and have made great strides. We've started online and written petition with almost 100 names just from spurts of online social contacts and word of mouth. We've had one racism forum in Waco that was covered by KWTX Ch 10 and aired Dec. 4 & 5. We were in the Marlin Democrat on Dec 5. We've contacted the OMB in Washington who is ultimately responsible for making decisions on racial categories. We have another forum on racism scheduled this Tue Dec 11 @ 6pm in Marlin TX. We've contacted all TX state and some federal officials regarding our petition. We've contacted national NAACP, TX State Conference, Dallas & Austin Branch, we're still waiting to hear back. We are in the process of setting up forums in Dallas, Austin, Atlanta, and Springfield MA. We've added another component to our fight...adding Hispanic/Latinos as a race on US Census. If you'd like to play a more active role please call 254-495-5556. THXS

Day 36 - FORGING AHEAD: Why did I agree to go on this journey about racism. This has proven to be one of the most difficult ventures I’ve ever embarked on. People run or shut down when it comes to discussions on color or changing how we are viewed solely on color. People pay to go to concerts, movies, clubs etc for entertainment but they wont participate in conversation related to their everyday lives…institutional racism. Laws, politics, education, social services and criminal justice are all affected by our perceived colors. After today, just 30 days into this journey I want to quit. However, after being exposed to the truth I can’t quit. I’d be a hypocrite to go about my everyday life status quo again. So much that I was taught in school…lies. So much I was taught by the world…lies. So much of what I thought I wanted based on someone else’s perception of what my full potential could be wasted energy. But as I go into 2013 I know my purpose and my mission is clear…I AM A CIVIL RIGHT ACTIVIST and ADVOCATE OF SURVIVAL. Sexual abuse a silent killer, child neglect a silent killer, domestic violence a silent killer, ignorance a silent killer and fear a silent killer BUT SOPHIA A LOUD SURVIVOR. Everything I’ve gone through equaled silence. BUT My existence was that of the matrix…in a place orchestrated by someone else and until GOD gave me the courage to seek out the truth for myself I would’ve remained trapped in their reality. My heart may be heavy with the weight of this journey but I still have joy I’m living my life according to my purpose and no one else’s!
