Western Massachusetts Council - Boy Scouts of America: Adopt an affirmative policy of non-discrimination toward LGBT membership.

A passive stance on this issue is morally wrong and does not uphold the tenets of scouting. Other youth service organizations, including the Girl Scouts, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and the 4H Club all welcome LGBT members and leaders. We love the Boy Scouts, but we can’t support the policy that is in place now. That is why we urge you to speak out and adopt an inclusive policy as other troops, packs, councils, and lodges across the country and within the commonwealth have done - so the Boy Scouts can maintain its relevancy, improve recruitment, and truly live by the principles it teaches its members. Let's teach our children to be brave, and stand up for the rights of others!

NOTE: We encourage everyone to join this campaign, but if you're a current or former Scout, parent, or leader, please say so in the "Why People Are Signing" section. Also, if you're a parent who has decided not to allow your child(ren) to participate in BSA because of the current discriminatory policy, or if you might withdraw your active scout(s) if the policy remains unchanged, please say so, especially if you live in Western Massachusetts. Thanks!

Now that the BSA has adopted a national policy of allowing openly gay youth to participate, we should, are, and will celebrate this big step forward.

However, we still need to work toward equality for adults. As far as I'm concerned this petition is still active, because we haven't reached our goal of inclusiveness for adults. We will be figuring out the next step in this process soon, and will keep you posted. Thanks to all of you for your help!

      Gratefully yours,

      Walker Lee

Thanks to you all for helping with this important cause. We have made real progress, but we can't stop now! It seems that some of the problems with sharing this petition have been fixed, so please take a minute to keep the momentum going, and let people know that they can help too.

Also, I recently had the pleasure of conversing with the woman who started a statewide petition last summer. Please consider signing it too; the wider we can spread our message, the better. Here is the link:

Because it's literally ridiculous to tell someone that can't participate because of their sexual preferences and/or gender identity

Because I live in Massachusetts, and I will not allow my sons to be boy scouts unless the BSA welcomes EVERYONE!

I was a Boy Scout myself in troop 23 in Great Barrington MA. When I was younger Boy Scouts was an important part of my life. I did a lot of amazing things like sailing boats, flying actual airplanes and went to the boy scout national jamboree where I got to meet then president Bill Clinton. In my adult life I have come out as transgender and even though I have entered a new time in my life I will never forget my time with the Boy Scouts and all they taught me. Please don't ban people who are only being there true selves from experiencing all the Boy Scouts have to offer
