WE SUPPORT Dr Al Armendariz's hard work in region 6. Hello? Remember that cuddly nerdy citizen-friendly scientist as head of the EPA regional office that we've all grown to love and cherish? Well his job is on the line this very momentbecause instead of being seen as the symbol of what's right at EPA, he's now being promoted as the Official Poster Boy of Everything Wrong with EPA by the allies of polluters in Congress and the right-wing media echo chamber.
Republican congressmen are preparing a House Resolution calling for his resignation. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson refuses "to say whether Dr. Armendariz would be fired or face any disciplinary action, saying the agency 'will continue to review' the situation," according to The Hill.
Forget how ridiculous it is. Forget how old the video is. Forget the context of the words being spoken in DISH, Texas - the capital of the Barnett Shale's Gasland-like nightmare. Forget that if the same words were spoken by Governor Perry about the pursuit of blue collar criminals, thesesame critics would be applauding. We are in danger of losing the best EPA Regional Administrator citizens have ever had. If you haven't sent Lisa Jackson an e-mail telling her how lucky you feel to have a guy like Dr. Al working for the public interest, then you're now part of the problem. If you haven't contacted your US Representative in support of Dr. Armendariz, then your job is not yet done. We know the pro-polluter interests are trying to nail his hide.
Where are the Democrats that supported his appointment? Where are the Big Enviro Groups? Now is not the time to be timid in the face of a New McCarthyism. We have to stand up and defend ourselves. Please don't make the mistake of thinking this won't happen. It's an election year. A hard-working federal administrator who's seen by citizens as a force for change in a place that could use a lot of it, is seen by those managing political campaigns as just another Beltway controversy they can do without - no matter how contrived. Please e-mail Lisa Jackson now at: email@example.com. CC your Congressman/woman. Waiting could be very costly to all of us.
