Great news! Maui County Council has voted in favor of supporting the Resolution to include Mandatory labeling for GMOs in the legislative package that will go to the State level for a vote. Mahalo to the 5 council members who stood for our right to know what's in our food & Mahalo to Elle Cochran for introducing and standing for this resolution. Now it is time to CONTACT YOUR LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES, and let them know HOW YOU WANT TO BE REPRESENTED in this issue. Call & ask when these public council meetings are held (ask about HB 1534), attend, testify and send in your letters. It was a persistent group effort that helped to pass this resolution in Maui County. It is the time to hold our LOCAL reps to account & ask that they vote in a way that REPRESENTS us. If we do not seek the information, the vote will quietly proceed without us having our say. Stay tuned & please keep sharing information about GMO labeling vote in YOUR COMMUNITY.

Update on the Bill for GMO Labeling in the State of Hawaii:

As one of the coordinators of this petition, it has been an honor to witness your passion and participation!! Thank you all! We are inspired by what is possible through our COLLECTIVE CARE. This is about our rights as citizens & human beings. This is about fairness, justice, and the democratic process at work. We will stand for what is right, “pono” and continue our efforts towards positive change.

After the House Committee received the testimony on Hcr/178/HR154, “The Health committee(s) headed by Representative Yamane & Representative Morikawa recommends that the measure be deferred.”

      The people voices “deferred?”

They may have deferred this particular measure, HR154/HCR178, but they cannot defer our voices & we will not defer our care!! Let’s celebrate that we have the courage to care and be proud that we are putting that care into action. This is but one step on the journey….it’s not a sprint but a marathon.

We encourage all of you to take a look for yourself, and review the testimony of immense support that this measure for labeling received. If you would like to view the testimony:

There were only a few testimonies that were strongly opposed to GMO labeling, and we collected and submitted over 1,000+ signatures for consideration into testimony just via this petition alone. We find it shocking that the health committee would defer this issue, with so many HI residents in support. However, this is an amazing response considering we had less than 72 hours getting the word out. This is a vibrant example of how important this issue is and how quickly support for this measure grew. This is a hopeful sign.

      ***Important Testimony Feedback:
It is important to note that a few of the testimonial letters that are clearly in support for the labeling of gmo's, clicked "oppose" when it seems that they may have meant that they were in "support" of this resolution. **Please consider this in future testimony. Make sure you are either "supporting" the bill/resolution or "opposing" it. I for example, oppose gmo's and supported the resolutions for labeling them. Please email us if you have any questions concerning this.

This petition renews itself today under the new focus of organized directed action and education. Action is needed to cause GMO labeling to become reality. For this to become a law, we’ll need to continue actively to educate our communities, share this message, and keep watch over this issue in the State Legislature. Please, let’s keep the momentum. Opponents to GMO labeling are hoping that this issue will go away, and that we’ll forget or become distracted. This issue affects each & every one of us. This land is sacred, our bodies and health are sacred!

      Actions you can take NOW:

      1. It seems that groups and associations mean something to the Representatives hearing testimony. If you belong to ANY civic group or organization and are willing to stand for GMO labeling (i.e.. Kiwanis, Real Estate groups, Naturopaths organizations, Doctors, PTAs, Farmers groups, Grocers groups) please let us know by emailing: usmaui@hotmail.com

      2. Please dig deep into our community… Let’s make this petition go viral. Post it to your Face book page & send this petition to anyone and everyone who cares about our future of this planet!! This time we sent 1,000 signatures into the House of Reps. Next go round let’s send 10,000!

      3. If you may have supportive contributions of any kind (skills, resources, contacts etc.) that may assist in our voices being more collectively strong in current planning and future state or county measures the next go round at the State Capitol) please reach out email to: usmaui@hotmail.com

      4. Make a donation so the work can continue:
GMO-FREE MAUI spearheaded this petition for ALL of Hawaii. Support came from South Point on Hawaii Island to the North Shore of Kauai.
GMO Free Maui works in the interest of all our islands and their citizens.
GMO Free Maui is an organization that is umbrella’d under Hawaii Seed (http://hawaiiseed.org/),
If you wish to make a donation to a non-profit working for food security both these organizations are doing good work:
Hawai`i SEED-is a statewide non-profit coalition of grassroots groups composed of farmers, doctors, scientists, lawyers, concerned citizens, and Native Hawaiians. Working on five islands to educate the public about the risks posed by genetically engineered organisms. We are dedicated to promoting diverse, local, healthy and ecological food and farming that supports real food security for the Hawaiian Islands.

Maui Tomorrow- For over two decades Maui Tomorrow has worked in partnership with community groups and individuals on issues, including alternative energy, food security, the preservation of natural and cultural resources, and more… all vital to Maui’s quality of life.

If you wish to be on a GMO FREE mailing list, please email Courtney at: usmaui@hotmail.com and we will compile contact information apart from this list so we can all come together on this important issue again before a vote in the House or Senate. This will also allow us to put the word out if there are any events on the islands!

People are fed up of the misleading information and pushing of GMfromMonsanto and others, they have a right to be protected from this without bothering to test Monsanto's 'safety' claims by traumatising animals in forced testing
