Walmart: Don't Target Autstic Children: Remove Autism Speaks "school supplies" from your stores

School should be a safe place-not for fundraising for the prevention and cure of Autistic students. Walmart has teamed up with Autism Speaks to sell Autism Speaks-themed puzzle piece "school supplies." These supplies will be available in Walmart stores throughout the country starting in August. The placement of the merchandise in the school supplies section, is cause for great concern. The puzzle supplies target school-aged children and families shopping for school materials. They also target and single out children on the autism spectrum who will be shopping in Walmart for their school supplies and then going to school with "puzzle piece" and autism logos drawing attention to them in ways that may unintentionally cause problems for them. Although Autism Speaks markets this as "acceptance" (a phrase co-opted from the Autistic community and parent supporters), and "awareness," what Autism Speaks is doing, clearly spelled out on merchandise, is donating 6% of the proceeds to "funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism."

Two Autistic parents blog about why selling school supplies to fundraise for "cures" for our children is a really bad idea:

After some new online posts including a letter to Autism Speaks by a walk supporter, the number of signers has grown a bit, but we need you to get the word out!

This is the company that makes the school supplies. When I tried their contact form, it did not work, but the petitions will now go directly to someone at Continental. You can email directly to koeppel@continentalacsry.com

    5. Autism Speaks Volunteer Opposes Walmart "School Supplies"

"How many thousands of school children are going to see that and perceive their autistic classmates as somehow being broken? How many self-aware autistic children are going to see that and perceive themselves as being somehow damaged, or less than? It would have taken so little to create packaging that was at least reasonably sensitive."

    7. Dear Autism Speaks: Cure Is Still a Four-Letter Word by Landon Bryce

"Autistic people have been asking Autism Speaks to stop using the cure language since long before there was an Autism Speaks." -Landon Bryce Excellent, well-researched article with many links and very clear photos of Autism Speaks' mission to cure autism- once again, this does not belong in a school setting: "Every purchase supports Autism Speaks, the largest research & advocacy organization. 6% of the net proceeds will be donated to Autism Speaks, a non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for Autism."

Landon Bryce of ThAutcast took this close-up photo. The photo shows that, rather than "acceptance" or even "awareness," the real goal of these sales is to cure the classmates of those who buy them. NOT APPROPRIATE FOR SCHOOL.

    10. Walmart employees think Autism Speaks' "school supplies" are a bad idea

      Paula Durbin-Westby
      Petition Organizer

Someone in another Walmart complained to management and the response was basically "We need to get these things out of here!" I will not say which Walmart or who told me this, because I do not want Walmart employees getting in trouble. But, yes, more than just those of us who are parents or Autistics see a big problem with this idea.

    11. YouTube video coming soon.

I went to a local Walmart and made a video. The "school supplies" are clearly marked, on the packing. 6% of the funds will be used to finding a CURE for autism. The video will show the packaging so you can see the focus of Autism Speaks' mission here (besides making money off autism). Nothing about "acceptance" is included. Stayed tuned. Video might take about 24 hours to turn around due to my having to work and raise a child( who is NOT happy with the "cure" idea).

This is a blog entry by the petition co-sponsor and Autistic Parent Melody Latimer. In it, she details why parents should be concerned about these "supplies" entering our schools, and explains to parents why some of us are concerned about the marketing of merchandise targeted toward one group of children with disabilities.

im getting sick of this. Autistic kids and people getting treated down to, they think just like normal, its just they way they speak, sometimes, and process, sometimes. other than that theyre normal.
