Keep Start Times the Same for DDE, DDMS, and Green Hope High

    1. Petition by

      Karen Carter

      Cary, NC

This is an online petition respectfully asking the WCPSS Board, Superintendent, and Staff to not change the Davis Drive Elementary start time from 7:45 to 9:15, the Davis Drive Middle School start time from 8:15 to 7:30 and the Green Hope High School start time from 8:05 to 7:25.

It does not work well to have DDE starting at 9:15 with the adjoining DDMS starting at 7:30, a full 1 hour and 45 minutes apart.  If you look at the proposed start times for the elementary and middle schools that share a campus, the lag time between the bell times is much smaller (anywhere from 5 minutes up to a max of 1 hour).   This is a discrepancy unique to the DDE and DDMS shared campus.

If Davis Drive Elementary's start time is changed to 9:15 that would necessitate the school to have a before-school program, which is currently not in place and would be a new financial burden for working families.

Numerous studies show that teenagers need 9 or more hours of sleep every night to nourish their rapidly changing brains. More sleep translates into better moods, higher motivation, fewer fatigue-related complaints, and a decrease in the risk of auto accidents. Below are links to two articles that summarize these studies and their impacts and you are encouraged to read them.

Please take this information into consideration when deciding on bell times for Wake County’s high schools and middle schools. The health and well-being of our teenagers is more important than arbitrary start times that may modestly improve the transportation system. The proposed start time of 7:30 am for Davis Drive Middle School and 7:25 am for Green Hope High (and other middle and high schools that already have similar start times) does NOT give our teenagers the best chance at success in school and may potentially be harming them mentally and physically.

Time is of the essence, as it appears the Board is voting on this matter on March 6th.  Please feel free to send your comments/suggestions to the BOE members:

This would cause a 1 hour and 45 minute difference between the elementary and middle school...which is ridiculous....and causes additional logistical issues for dual working parents or single parents.

I have one child in Carpenter Elementary and do not want him going to East Cary. I would love for him to go to Davis Drive and then Green Hope.

Please do not change the start times so dramatically for Davis Drive Elementary School. 15 minutes would be no big deal but 90-100 minutes is a major change for DDE where my children go! It will result in working parents like us needing before school care AND after school care for the children. Can DDE even offer before school care? If not, we have to find other care outside the school. Adding child care costs back into our budget after 7 years of daycare - just to fix busing routes / costs - makes no sense to me. This change could double our childcare expenses which already include after school care. Stop busing kids all over the place if you want to save time, money and gas.

Elementary school kids do not need to sleep in late. They need to get to bed early. And those in sports after school will have to stay up late for homework, dinner and any chance at family time but still get up early as we parents have to work. Our jobs won't adjust our hours based on bus schedules and we have no choice but to work. While it is our choice to allow our children to be competitive gymnasts, the gym won’t adjust practice hours to accommodate later school schedules either. So the kids will have no downtime except in the morning before school where they will be tired. Not a good way to start a day every school day.

Not to mention - traffic is horrendous on High House and Davis on a regular day during rush hour. Cary already is going to add more families to the immediate area by building Bradford 360 multi-family units at that intersection plus the Seniors who will move into Searstone. Adding high school kids to rush hour in the mornings as well as the middle school kids who will have to be driven to school on dark mornings is crazy! This intersection will be a disaster and can not support that much traffic. The Greenhope kids. some being new drivers, have enough accidents in their cars on lunch break when I am heading home for lunch without rush hour traffic. Besides, check out high school kids accident rates on Carpenter Upchurch. Put a bunch of sleepy teenagers on the road early rushing to school in rush hour traffic and some of us will never get to work!

Please, please, please leave the schedule as it is or with only a 15 minutes maximum modification as you are doing at the majority of other schools. It is in the best interest of the children, of the parents who have to work and our community.
