Veterans Affairs: Support a 90 yr old Purple Heart recipient and veteran of two wars

      Nicole March

      Sun City Center, United States

My dad, James March, is a World War II and Korean War veteran with a Purple Heart he received in WW2 -- but now that he's seriously ill, the VA is refusing to help him.

Even though his injury from the war caused him terrible back and leg pain throughout his life, my dad never complained to the VA -- he rarely asks for help from anyone. But now that he's 90 years old, dad is really sick and he urgently needs help from an assisted living facility. Our whole family is worried about him: he's barely eating, he's nearly lost his eyesight, and he's suffering from dementia. In just a few months, he lost 70 pounds.

Dad needs constant care, but Mom isn't able to be a full-time caregiver because she's struggling with cancer recovery and diabetes -- and my family doesn't have enough money to pay out of pocket for him to get a home aide.

The VA lost our application for assistance two times before they denied our claim. Even though my parents are crippled by medical costs and their home  was foreclosed on 2/27/2013, the VA says my dad "makes too much money" to qualify for help. In reality, my parents barely have enough left over at the end of the month to buy their groceries, let alone pay for at-home care.

My dad was there when our country needed him to fight in WWII, healing others as a medic on the battlefield where he earned a Purple Heart. Now that he needs us, will we turn our back on him? Sign my petition asking that the VA give my dad the benefits he and all veterans deserve for their service and sacrifice.

still looking at this page. We are still actually dealing with the aftereffect of the insurances and all that jazz and what you do after someone has died. Once thats settled I may see what is available to my mother if anything, from the VA

for all the continued signatures. Its amazing though we never really got what we wanted. Maybe the more signatures that still come will help the next old guy who needs help.

Don't grieve for me for now I'm free. I'm following the path God laid for me. I took his hand when I heard him call. I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, To laugh, to love, to work, or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I've found that peace at the close of day. If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Ah yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow:
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life's been full I've savored much,
Good times, good friends, a loved one's touch. Perhaps my time seemed all to brief, Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, he set me free.

Thank you all for your hope, help, and thank you's, advice, and completely amazing thoughts of care. Last night he passed away at Lakeland hospital. Wake will be Monday in sun city fl, with a mass Tuesday also in sun city. Thank you from your spots around the country and world.

When this is all over id like to consider continuing this fight as i've been told by many others that my mom is deserving of money. We will see, perhaps this petition will continue. I have no idea if that is true.

here is the prayer picked out for him today- Id thought id share. It will be in another post

    9. As with his age this wasnt unexpected but he is dying now.

But I never expected it to be this way. We never expected the words amputation, or rehab or anything like that again. I didnt think he would need to have the pain of a amputation surgery at his age, or the slow painful infection of letting it go. We expected a call he went in his sleep not this. Unfortunately my dad couldnt have the surgery thursday as he flatlined when it started. He was on life support until yesterday when we had family members come in to see him. he is off it now and still breathing but it will be anytime now. Im exhausted and I wish it didnt have to be this way. I question did the home he was in not take enough of a look at his leg? how did it get in that condition? but thats nothing I guess im going to worry about now. it will all be over soon.

so we sent away for his medical records and they claim "they need more information" we sent copies of his discharge papers what more do you want?

we have hit the proverbial wall and are losing hope quick

    11. Sorry I havent updated this week/the gofundme page

      Nicole March
      Petition Organizer

we have been working hard in phone calls and paperwork and finally met a Veterans Officer who was smart and kind to us and has at least been helping us. But as we are still awaiting medical records and may have to move him AGAIN, nothing technically has progressed. Im not really thrilled about things in general, but it is what it is. I may change or end this petition in the next few weeks. We thank you all again for your signatures, and for your immense kindness for another human being in need.

As I stated before A friend made a page for us at gofundme. No one has donated and I wasnt expecting people too. But since I had some requests via PM for the link here it is.

    13. Unsure about this- a friend is trying to persuade me to try donations

      Nicole March
      Petition Organizer

A friend of mine asked to put a donation page up for me at gofundme. I had no intention of asking for money, but i've had people tell me maybe I should ask for more professional help ie. a lawyer or aging care advocate. It makes me very anxious to have a donation page up it feels bizarre. I wont post the link here but if you want it PM me. I have no issues if no one wants to donate.

      Nicole March
      Petition Organizer

I have seen a couple of responses saying If true...

I completely understand this comment. I know there are nasty people committing fraud. I work in the security arena and its unfortunate that sometimes people will lie. So I want all our bases covered.

      We are not lying.
we are not looking for a handout we just want help for my dad

so if anyone wants proof please PM me.

I will show proof of foreclosed house
      VA denial letter
      medical bills etc
      whatever you wish.

Just wanted to put that out there that we have proof of our predicament.

I know some will say this is completely unnecessary but I just want to make sure that if needed this can easily be proved true

Thank you all again for signing

    18. Purple heart.

      Nicole March
      Petition Organizer

Now we have issues with this. I have questions to vets here. His purple heart is not listed on his discharge. Now ive been told this can be amended. (by the way we have the medal itself, my father knows how he got it) has this happened to anyone else? I was told it can be amended with a DD215.

    19. Part 2?

      Nicole March
      Petition Organizer

to make him eligible? If by chance we are turned down for medicaid are these nursing homes going to take us to court for this money ?? could we be turned down by the VA for something else? My father needs constant care, my mother cant provide it she is not a nurse and neither am I. He has dementia and can be a handle to deal with. Boy can he yell still! Coming home would be a threat to his own safety and possibly my mothers as a caregiver due to his confusion and sickness. So what do we do when the whole option is a giant circle?
Before this whole VA thing began we spoke with Elder services we were put on waivers that could take a year plus, we were told about medicaid, a self abuse report was filed due to his non eating. THEY recommended the VA.
I tried to find every option available and to do the "right thing" What are the options left?
I will take anyone' s recommendations.

      He and we deserve better,

But now im at a loss for the next step.

    20. What to do? what else is left? this will be in a few parts

      Nicole March
      Petition Organizer

So I ask the question if no option is left where does he go?

So I spoke with someone today from a non VA-related but veterans website nonetheless. They were very nice. They explained the denial a bit better to my understanding. He has been denied because we are not paying currently for his specialized nursing care as we await medicaid and were awaiting VA. Now while we are not paying we ARE BEING BILLED. ITS ALOT THOUSANDS. Im guessing because if we are turned down by medicaid THEY WANT THERE MONEY.

According to this VA affiliate now if he was denied medicaid and we started paying for him privately for a home health nurse or a nursing home we could qualify as that medical expense would deplete our supposed income.

But the question is this. HOW could we even start to pay for a private home health aide,or a nursing home? its a catch 22. We this week at the end of the month have trouble coming up with gas money to and from his facility so how could we start to pay

MY mother and I want to say thank you to everyone who has signed. We never ever expected this response and as it seems to keep steaming ahead we are shocked really shocked. As I am relatively new to FL (we are from NY originally) I doubted I could get half of everyone I know on facebook to sign let alone this. If we could say thank you to each of you personally we would. Thanks again for this. This week ill be attempting to contact various outlets and hopefully with some of power this petition has I hope I can garner some interest.

As a daughter to a veteran and a previous volunteer at a VA hospital, it breaks my heart to see real heroes mistreated by our government; the same people who sent them to war in the first place.
