EXPANDED MERIT TIME & GERIATRIC PAROLE RELEASE BILLS and S.A.F.E. PAROLE ACT BILL at www.parolereform.com TELL EVERYONE! support these bills especially Gov. Cuomo www.andrewcuomo.gov
Write to your Senators &Assembly members, last name then .nysenate.gov or .nyassembly.gov OUR VOICES ARE NEEDED.
We were successful during the election process, now the new year brings hope these bills will become law, but only if we toell our lawmakers as a community (state) to support them. ESPECIALLY THE NEW DEMOCRATS
For those skeptical, tell them 1. all new yorkers are affected by the prison system mosthave someone in prison we love or care about and all of us pay taxes to operate the prisons. 2. new york is one the of the lst states to offer these privileges to offenders who work hard to earn them. 3. these bills will save the state millions of dollars a year in houseing, medical care, parole denials, etc. and even more when famly friends and federal programs pay their expenses and some offenders will generate tens of thousands of dollars or more from employment, home purchases, sales taxes. these millions of dollars every year will save teachers/schools, save/create jobs, stop the rising taxes , stop our young adults (our children) from leaving new york. Information law makers have continually misinformed, and neglected to tell us. 4. most importantly, statistics show these offenders DO NOT commit new crimes upon their release, making these bills safe for our communitites as well as good for our wallets. Below amoung others are web sites that verify these hidden from us and the money wasted by law makers for not supporting and passing these bills. Some of the satistics are directly from government web sites (dept of corrections and community supervision and parole)5. Safe guards are also in place through the bills, the prison and parole ysytems to keep the most violent, habitual and offenders who refuse to be rehabilitated behind bars. 6. These bills benefit men and women who were first time offenders that made a bad choice during a lapse in sound judgement, were children or wrongfully convicted (wrong place, wrong time) but who have since devoted their lives, by working strenuously in the hopes of returning to their families and communities as responsible rehabilitated people.
These bills will allow those A-1 felons through rigorous programming and good disciplinary records to earn, in part MERIT TIME - 2 months a year cut off their sentence, S.A.F.E PAROLE ACT will provide fair parole hearings to all offenders by removing "the nature of the crime" as a means to deny parole. THE CRIME CAN NEVER CHANGE BUT THE PEOPLE CAN and have. Geriatric parole release offenders age 60+ with 1/2 their sentence and all required programming completed and a good disciplinary record would go before the parole board at that time.
Most of the offenders discussed above with the number of years spent behind bars are "elderly" (50+) and each one costs the state approximately $70,000.00 or more a year. Some totalling in the hundreds of thousands with costs rising every year (ACCESS, aclu.org, pamphlet titled "AT AMERICAS EXPENSE, THE MASS INCARCERATION OF THE ELDERLY"). Right now it costs around 77 billion dollars to operate our nations penal system.
It is time to be New Yorkers again, instead of the bickering democrats and republicans we have become. It is going to take a state to rebuild a state. Lets start now, tell our law makers to pass these bills, this year.
For the actual bills, contact the sponsors, Senators V. Montgomery & R. Hassel-Thompson, and Assembly members J.Aubry & K.Camara, at last name, then .nysenate.gov or .nyassembly.gov . For statistics go to DOCCS, Parole or Department of Justice then .ny or .gov, email@example.com or (518) 253-7533 and censusbureau.gov for the number of young adults (our children) leaving N.Y in the droves. If requested all the statistics (costs, parole denials, etc.) will be given to you. An informed New Yorker is a smart New Yorker.
