USDA: No More Lion Burgers! Ban the Sale of Lion Meat

It's unbelievable that restaurants in the US are allowed to serve lion meat. It's almost impossible to find out where the meat comes from -- it could be imported, from animals in zoos or circuses, or from lions raised on farms in the Midwest -- the people who kill lions and sell them as meat aren't exactly forthcoming ... and they don't have to be because lion meat isn't really regulated by the government.

That's not only bad news for the animals, who could be raised and slaughtered in inhumane conditions, but also for people. The diets and drug use in lions aren't regulated for human consumption, which means lion meat could be dangerous to eat.

Over the summer, I started a petition when I heard about a restaurant in Kansas that was planning a dinner event with meat from lions and other exotic animals. That restaurant listened to us and took lion off the menu, but since then, I've heard of other restaurants in other parts of the country serving lion burgers. This shouldn't be legal.

Right now, the US Fish and Wildlife Department is considering adding lions to the endangered species list. These amazing animals are already considered endangered by several other countries. I've done volunteer work with African lions and recently visited a sanctuary for big cats in the U.S. These majestic animals deserve better than to wind up on someone's plate. They should be protected, not cooked and eaten!

Please join me in asking the USDA to ban the sale of lion meat.

Lawmaker battles to ban lion meat

Dying to try lion? If you live in Illinois, you'd better get your fix quickly before proposed legislation would make the "mane" course a Class A misdemeanor. Illinois State Representative Luis Arroyo proposed HB 2991 to the state's General Assembly last month. If the Lion Meat Act passes, Illinois will become the first U.S.

Here is a petition that has been reopened in light of the recent legislation push in Illinois to ban the sale of lion meat. This petition targets Czimer's of Illinois who was jailed a few years ago for selling endangered tiger meat labeled as lion. Support would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Finally proposed legislation to ban lion meat sale in Illinois.

Meat from LIONS being sold in Illinois as state lawmaker pushes legislation that will ban it

A new bill has been proposed in Illinois designed to deal with the little known trade in lion meat out of the Midwestern state. 'The Lion Meat Act', sponsored by Rep. Luis Arroyo (D-Chicago), would make it illegal to sell, slaughter or eat the king of the jungle, punishing anyone caught with a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.

    7. Tell USFWS to list the African lion as an endangered species!

      Cheryl Semcer
      Petition Organizer

The United States Fish and Wildlife Service is considering listing the African lion as an endangered species. If they do, lion trophies would no longer be allowed into the US and it would be illegal to serve lion meat as well. Legal trophy hunting is a major cause of African Lions' decline -- and two thirds of the African Lions killed by trophy hunters end up in the U.S. That's thousands of lions! You can help change this.

We have until Mon. Jan 28th to voice our opinion. Please tell the government you want lions listed as an endangered species. You can comment on the upper right hand corner of the following page:

Save African lions from extinction by listing them as an endangered species!

Many people already think African lions are protected as an endangered species, but they aren't listed under the Endangered Species Act. That means...

Interesting look into the lion meat industry.

      The Daily

It sounded like a sick joke: A Tucson, Ariz., restaurant announced it was adding "farm raised, African lion" tacos to its menu. Many Americans who heard about Boca Tacos' seeming publicity stunt earlier this year were surprised to learn the big cats can be legally butchered and sold like hamburger in the United States.

Lions are very social and their pride is their family, im sure they feel loss and pain like most living creatures. All of God's creatures deserve respect.

      1. The lions are exotic wild animals that should be celebrated not eaten.

      2. The lion meat is not being inspected by the USDA. I mean who is making sure this meat is somewhat ok to eat? Not safe for consumers.

It is inconceivable to me that we have to sign a petition to say how wrong this in every way. Surely it should be obvious. Please ban immediately everything connected to this travesty.
