      Dianne Shew
      Petition Organizer

In a letter to Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, Congressman Devin Nunes and 4 other members of Congress have requested that Salazar directs the National Park Service to ask the court for a one year extension of existing permits. " A one year extension would allow adequate time for the permitting process to be updated in order to reflect new wilderness requirements and it may spare the small but time honored industry from the chopping block" states Nunes. Nunes is fighting for your right to visit the Park on horseback if you so chose. This one year extention would allow you to visit Sequoia National Park on horseback this year. Thanks to Congressman Nunes for his full support.

    10. Horse packing in National Parks on hold

      Dianne Shew
      Petition Organizer

For the past 30 years, Tim and Dianne Shew have used horses to pack people, including those with disabilities, into some of the most pristine areas of Sequoia National Park.

The husband and wife, owners of the Balch Park Pack Station above Springville, have never been challenged or questioned for doing so — until now.

Their operation — and their livelihood — is in serious jeopardy as they wait for a judge to decide what action to take after a 700-member hikers association successfully sued Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks over the use of commercial stock in the two parks’ wilderness areas.

I feel it is very important to have access to the National Parks. Horseback is a time honored tradition and alternative that allows people that are unable to endure hiking the access to these areas so that they too may enjoy them.
