Urge the Obama Administration to End Rape of Youth in Adult Prisons

    1. Sponsored by

      Campaign for Youth Justice

On any given day, over 10,000 youth are detained or confined in adult jails and prisons—putting them at risk of sexual assault.

According to research by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 21% and 13% of all substantiated victims of inmate-on-inmate sexual violence in jails in 2005 and 2006 respectively were youth under the age of 18. Research also shows that youth are 36 times more likely to commit suicide in an adult jail than in a juvenile detention facility.

Through the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), the Obama administration has a critical opportunity to protect children in the justice system by banning the placement of youth under 18 in adult jails and prisons.

Take action now to tell President Obama to end the rape and sexual assault of youth in the justice system by ensuring that PREA keeps youth out of adult prisons and jails.

Also rape in prison are crimes. This must be stopped to protect these people. Because in prison there is no escape, and these rapes are inhuman!

A civilized nation does not lock away its children and youth in places of harm.

Like everything else in America, the prison empire is all about money and disenfranchising the poor and minorities. The drug laws exist to create more prisoners for more cheap (after it's subsidized by the taxpayers) prison labor for a variety of large corporations, more money for the lawyers and job secuity for police and "correction" officers. And, like the tobacco companies that target children, poor and minority children are led down the primrose path to prison in a variety of ways. Juvenile detention centers are bad. Adult prisons are much worse. And, the immigration detention centers are the worst of all. America's prison empire is yet another reason why I'm embarassed to be an American!
