In the last several days, the president of Chick-Fil-A, Dan Cathy, reaffirmed the company's anti-gay marriage stance and their allocation of funds to support organizations countering the marriage equality movement.
Goal #5 of the University of Missouri-Kansas City's Strategic Plan reads,
"To celebrate diversity in all aspects of university life, creating inclusive environments, culturally competent citizens, and globally-oriented curricula and programs.
* Cultivate an environment committed to civility and respect where all students, faculty and staff are empowered to pursue their personal, academic and professional goals.
* Provide a diverse learning and life experience to create culturally competent citizens.
* Recruit and retain a diverse campus community.
* Ensure diversity initiatives are actively reviewed and owned by the University community."
Chancellor Leo Morton's blog on diversity reads,
"Diversity is one of the core values of UMKC — and it’s a critical value for anyone who wants to succeed in our increasingly complex, multicultural world today. As I said at the event today the more culturally diverse we are, the more apt we are to be equipped for change. I think Doris hit the nail on the head when she said that diversity isn’t just something you can see on the outside. Sometimes those differences come about because of life experiences – for example, a student or an employee might be a veteran or a single parent.
Campuses should be places that celebrate our human differences. Educators have to be attuned to the needs of people with a wide range of experiences so they can create programs that help students succeed and feel welcome, no matter their background."
Chick-Fil-A's public stance on gay rights helps create a hostile environment in our campus community. This petition calls for the removal of Chick-Fil-A from UMKC so that we are true to our goals and values . Everyday this restaurant stays on our campus, UMKC is saying that chicken sandwiches are more important than the respect and dignity of our LGBTQIA students, faculty and staff.
