In the last several days, the president of Chick-Fil-A, Dan Cathy, reaffirmed the company's anti-gay marriage stance and their allocation of funds to support organizations countering the marriage equality movement.

Goal #5 of the University of Missouri-Kansas City's Strategic Plan reads,
"To celebrate diversity in all aspects of university life, creating inclusive environments, culturally competent citizens, and globally-oriented curricula and programs.

* Cultivate an environment committed to civility and respect where all students, faculty and staff are empowered to pursue their personal, academic and professional goals.
* Provide a diverse learning and life experience to create culturally competent citizens.
* Recruit and retain a diverse campus community.
* Ensure diversity initiatives are actively reviewed and owned by the University community."

Chancellor Leo Morton's blog on diversity reads,

"Diversity is one of the core values of UMKC — and it’s a critical value for anyone who wants to succeed in our increasingly complex, multicultural world today. As I said at the event today the more culturally diverse we are, the more apt we are to be equipped for change. I think Doris hit the nail on the head when she said that diversity isn’t just something you can see on the outside. Sometimes those differences come about because of life experiences – for example, a student or an employee might be a veteran or a single parent.

Campuses should be places that celebrate our human differences. Educators have to be attuned to the needs of people with a wide range of experiences so they can create programs that help students succeed and feel welcome, no matter their background."

Chick-Fil-A's public stance on gay rights helps create a hostile environment in our campus community. This petition calls for the removal of Chick-Fil-A from UMKC so that we are true to our goals and values . Everyday this restaurant stays on our campus, UMKC is saying that chicken sandwiches are more important than the respect and dignity of our LGBTQIA students, faculty and staff.

We are making so much progress, and I wanted to take a moment to thank each and every one of you. Even though we still have a ways to go to achieve our goal of removing Chick-fil-A from UMKC, this would not be possible without supporters.

I can already confirm one victory: Mel Tyler, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, has invited me to attend a meeting with him and two faculty members from the LGBTQIA faculty/staff group SPECTRUM. This will be happening next week, and the topic of which is how to move forward addressing the Chick-fil-A on campus. I believe this is a sign that the Administration IS taking notice, and is willing to help facilitate a discussion on the future of Chick-fil-A on our campus.

We must keep pressing and engaging people. Thank you so much for all that you do.

Tonight, after only 24 hours online, our petition has surpassed 150 signatures. This is a terrific milestone. However, it is just the beginning! In order to succeed we need to keep building this momentum.

      How you can help:
      - Share it on Facebook. Tweet it out. Blog about it. If you haven't already, consider posting the link into a status update. It's quick, easy, and provides great visibility.
      - Know some folks in particular that would sign? Send it to them via email! This is a great way to find people willing to share the petition with their friends!
      - Help us reach out to local blogs, mailing lists, and organizations. There are many allies in organizations across Kansas City.

In the next day, we'll be posting details about our first action (National Day of Action on August 3rd) - and our first planning meeting for the campaign to remove Chick-fil-A from UMKC!

      Thank you for everything,

A company that uses patron’s money to support hate groups of any kind, is not only devious, it demonstrates that it is okay to promote bullying, encourage criminalization of a minority, and eradicate human rights. Such a corporation should not be allowed in a place of learning. Homosexuality is a natural part of human evolution, to promote hate against one class of Americans causes pain to all Americans.

i think any school that doesn't want chick fil a there in order to further support the diversity of their school should be allowed that.

Because I do not agree with Chick-Fil-A's business practices.

The university should ensure that any business contracting with UMKC must adhere to the schools nondiscrimination statement. Does the University merely need to show there is a "Strategic Plan" in place, then leave it at that, taking no action toward implementing it? Perhaps "plan" should become "policy."

I am a UMKC Grad school graduate and I am strongly opposed to any organization which harbors prejudiced agendas from profiting off of University students. Chick-Fil-A either go away or just cook the damn chickens and keep your politics private rather than corporate.
