Keep Patti Adler as a Professor

      Boulder, CO

Patti Adler is a professor in the Sociology Department at CU Boulder who teaches Deviance. In her lecture, she presented a skit about prostitution as an interactive learning activity. The university saw this as "inappropriate" and decided to force a buyout upon her. The lecture was attempting to make a lesson about a deviant activity more interesting (considering that the class is indeed entitled "Deviance"). Patti is a well-respected and dedicated educator who has literally been the face of the Sociology Department – students in a variety of majors want to take her class and love it as well. She puts all her effort into this class and is always making sure we are learning and understanding the material by making lectures captivating. Currently there is a movement trying to help her keep her position here at the university. This petition will assist in presenting to the school's administrators how important she is to the student body here, and how much of a poor decision we think this is by the school.

To:
University of Colorado Boulder, Sociology Department
University of Colorado Boulder, College of Arts & Sciences
I want Patti Adler to stay as a professor and employee of the University of Colorado Boulder.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

Administration and other faculty are having a meeting Wednesday morning about the issue! I have e-mailed the petition list and comments to Dean Leigh and other administrators, which will hopefully be reviewed during this meeting!

This could be good! We have made it clear that this is an issue that needs to be dealt with!

Boulder faculty call emergency meeting to discuss Patti Adler

By Sarah Kuta, Camera Staff Writer Posted: 12/17/2013 12:47:39 PM MST Updated: 12/17/2013 01:35:59 PM MST Members of the University of Colorado faculty have called an "emergency meeting" to discuss the situation surrounding suspended sociology professor Patti Adler.

    3. Summary of the Meeting With Dean Leigh

Well, a few of us met with the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences on Tuesday, December 17. Essentially, the conversation was somewhat of a giant circle. We expressed our concerns and disappointment. The dean assured us that Patti was still a professor of the university, but it was in her best intentions to "cool off" – not teach the class – next semester. Through further discussion, it was discovered that Patti has the option to have the class reviewed by other faculty members.

Apparently Patti was unaware that she had the option to have the class reviewed. It seemed as if no one was aware that she had this option until today. The only thing she was told was in fact that it was in her best intentions to not teach the class next semester.

As for the petition, the dean did acknowledge that it was impressive how many signatures we have been able to gather!

We have been able to schedule a meeting with Steven Leigh (Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences) to present our concerns and the petition. We'll try our best to fight for Patti! Once again, thanks for all of the support! It has been much appreciated!

    6. Response From University Administration

The university administration has sent out emails with mixed messages about Patti's employment status. They claim that she is still an employee of the university but is on a probationary period. They also claim that there was some mass criticism coming from TAs and ATAs part of the class. Those TAs and ATAs have spoken out following receiving the email saying they haven't even been asked how they felt about the skit or been contacted by administration at all. Here's the email in full:

Inside Higher Ed – a national publication that writes about colleges and universities, including issues of academic freedom – is looking to write a story about the situation. If you could please email the editor Scott Jaschik (scott.jaschik@insidehighered.com) about any information on the situation, that would be great!

There seems to be a nasty link between prostitution as a subject/profession and the professor's gender. Hmmmm.

As a mother and grandmother, education is very important to me. Patti Adler is an inspiring, open-minded, and engaged educator. We need more professors like her.

The reason they are fireing her for has nothing to do with harming the student body. A Skitt about prostitution is not inappropiate. Prostitution does exsist...and it can be a dangerous way to make money. i hope her skitt showed that..i think its a good idea to show students that prostitution can be dangerous.
