United States Senate: Fix the Filibuster rule and end the Secret Hold

The past decade has seen a dramatic increase in the use of the filibuster and the Secret Hold. These Senate rules have been abused to stop ongoing Senate business in an apparent effort to create a self-fulfilling prophecy of dysfunctional government. Fix these broken rules as the first order of business with the new Congress.  If these rules are fixed, there will be better transparency in governance and a greater chance of the Senate fulfilling the will of the people.  This is an important step to address the serious business of the nation.

      Secret holds

OF ALL THE maddening practices that clog the arteries of the national legislature, the most infuriating may be the Senate institution known as the "secret hold." As has been vividly demonstrated this year, a single senator can stop action -- on a piece of legislation or a pending nomination -- by...

Larry Cohen on Eliminating the Silent Filibuster | Moyers & Company | BillMoyers.com

BILL MOYERS: Welcome. Circle next Tuesday in red, the 22nd of January. That's the day the United State Senate could decide whether to return from the dead by reforming the filibuster and allowing democracy to work. Once upon a time the filibuster enabled a clique of Senators, or even just one, to stall progress by prolonged speaking, emphasis on speaking.

EDITORIAL: Fix the filibuster | Reid shouldn't back away from Senate rule reform

If Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid isn't wavering on his commitment to making meaningful changes to the Senate's much-abused filibuster rule, he's doing an awfully good imitation of someone who is doing just that.

The uncertain fate of Senate filibuster reform

Just last night, Rachel asked Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) whether the larger and more progressive Senate caucus might finally reform Senate filibuster rules in the new Congress. The senator replied, "I am so hopeful." Given the need, Klobuchar isn't the only one. Take a look at ...

Chart of the Day: Republicans and the Filibuster

We haven't had an excuse to talk about Republican abuse of the filibuster lately, so here's a nice chart for you that spells it out. It comes from JS, a regular reader, and instead of just showing the rise in the filibuster over the past 50 years, it color codes each Senate session to represent the party in the minority.

41 votes shouldn't be more powerful than 59 votes.

This is important because people look at what is voted on and not on the infinite posturing of politicians, we need to see what our Senate is willing to pass or block and then if we do not like it we vote in a different senate. What if we could not have a president with out 60 percent of voter support, we would never have presidents. Democracy is about majority rule and if we do not have that we do not function, especially when it is much more politically expedient to be against something a rival is offering, and even easier if you do not have to vote and show opposition on a public vote.

Its the only way to make it fair to all Americans! It has been abused for political and finantial gain. We need the return of a talking filibuster!
