Change the Roman Catholic Church's stance on gay marriage.

In December 2013, the students at Eastside Catholic School in Seattle experienced an egregious injustice when our beloved vice principal, Mark Zmuda, was forced to resign because of his marriage to another man.

When administrators learned that Mr. Z had married his partner over the summer, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle insisted that he step down. As vice principal and the high school's swim coach, Mr. Z was well liked and widely respected by students and our community. I'm the senior class president and I can say that the student body is outraged that an incredible administrator, coach, and human being was fired solely because of his love and marriage for another human being.

When we heard the news, we started off with a sit-in at our school to support Mr. Z, but we know much more will be required for Catholic schools like ours to keep talented educators at our schools. We've heard of other teachers across the country who have also been forced out for similar reasons and we know it will take a national campaign to save our teachers.

We are uniting in order to change the Catholic Church’s opposition of gay marriage. We've been encouraged by recent statements on these issues made by Pope Francis and we feel it's time to revisit the policy and act as Jesus would have -- loving and supporting every person regardless of their marital status. United, we want to end the policy that takes away passionate and talented educators from Catholic schools so that the Catholic Church can achieve its mission of acting with unconditional love in every situation.

Please join me in asking the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to revisit its policies and help us keep Mr. Z and other teachers across the country.

This is not an Anti-Catholic Church movement or a Gay Rights movement. Our true goal is to change the way the Church approaches gay marriage. We must do so with positive attitudes, comments and collaboration with the Holy Catholic Church.

Our cause has reached millions, being picked up by hundreds of media stations and journals including the New York Times, the Associated Press, and ABC News. However, we can't let this be a couple day social media frenzy. We are working towards ways to advance our cause for after the Christmas season and must keep the momentum on this petition rolling in order to help us work with the Catholic Church towards a solution. Thank you for your support!

The students at Eastside Catholic High School staged a successful sit in today to educate, spread awareness, and take a stand on the Catholic Church's gay marriage policy. We garnered the support of almost all of the other Catholic schools in the Seattle area who held a similar sit in. Our goal, however, is not to make this a one day event. We intend to come up with a plan to present our complaints as a Catholic community and beyond to the Catholic Church. The beauty of being a Catholic is that we are allowed to disagree and engage in discussion with our Church. This is our right. We are taking it. Help us get there.

I personally don't have any opinions on the institute of marriage, other than I don't really believe in it myself. I would marry my bf if it benefited us maybe financially, but I'm not going to pay to have a piece of paper that says I love the person I'm living with. But anyone who DOES want to get married shouldn't be punished, abused, and have their rights taken away because of it. It's nobody else's business if two people, not one male indivual and one female, are in love and get married. Marriage is about love, and is, essentially, a private matter and shouldn't be used publicly as the only reason to take away someone's rights to keep their, hopefully, hard earned job. But I guess a lot of people think only THEIR idea of love is acceptable. I feel sorry for those people. They're missing out on the many varied other types of love out there because of their own misguided beliefs. But I understand that's their choice to not participate in those other types of love, and it's no one else's business how they live and believe. But it definitely doesn't give them a right to use someone ELSE'S beliefs against them. People need to learn to mind their own PERSONAL business and stop trying to force it into PUBLIC business.

I'm signing because after 40 years as a Catholic (16 of which was spent in Catholic education), I feel the Catholic Church is turning away from teaching through Jesus' example. If we are made in his image and likeness, how can we judge two people willing to make a commitment to each other and living a life serving the Lord? Until there is a place for everyone in the Catholic Church, there is no room for me.

As an Active Catholic, and a monogamously-married woman who is married to a man, I abhor the church's stance on LGBTQ peoples. I myself identify as Bisexual, and have been "out" about my Bisexuality, for over 20 years.

Please become the inclusive, "universal" (Catholic means Universal!) Church you are intended to be...

As a homosexual, i would like to support and sign any petition that involves gay rights, whether it involves another state that won't even affect where i live, I would like to see equality nationwide!
