The Union-Scioto High School has just achieved notoriety for the VIOLENT beating of a student (caught on camera and quite disturbing). The student was attacked for being perceived as gay and beaten for no reason except hatred, intolerance, and a propensity for violence. His attacker was merely suspended for 3 days. To date no criminal charges have been filed.
The school district does not have an anti-bullying policy that includes sexual orientation or gender identity - creating an unsafe environment for students. On the homepage of the school district website is the following: "Students of the Union-Scioto Local School District will achieve and succeed in a safe and drug free environment." How can a student be safe, or feel secure, when their classmates are violently attacked??
DEMAND that the school district immediately alter their policy to reflect equal rights for all students including those who may be part of the GLBTQ community or are wrongly targeted for their perceived status. Ask the school to address issues of safety, violence, hatred and intolerance within their system.
The state of Ohio is currently considering a bill that would add these to the list of protections against bullying. Ask that Ohio legislators pass the bill (Ohio House Bill 208) and create the safe environment the school district promises their students.
The school district can be contacted via e-mail:
Superintendent Dwight Garrett - firstname.lastname@example.org
High School Principal James Osborne - email@example.com
High School - (740) 773-4105
Administration Office - (740) 773-4102
E-MAIL them and encourage them to change the school policy and teach students tolerance. CALL them and ask them to protect students and encourage a safe learning environment for all their students.
The web page also contains the words: "A student is not just a statistic. He or she is a flesh and blood human being with feelings and emotions." - DO NOT LET THE (unidentified) VICTIM OF THIS ASSAULT BECOME ANOTHER STATISTIC!!
