Union-Scioto School District: Protect your students (especially GLBTQ) from bullying and violence!

The Union-Scioto High School has just achieved notoriety for the VIOLENT beating of a student (caught on camera and quite disturbing). The student was attacked for being perceived as gay and beaten for no reason except hatred, intolerance, and a propensity for violence. His attacker was merely suspended for 3 days. To date no criminal charges have been filed.

The school district does not have an anti-bullying policy that includes sexual orientation or gender identity - creating an unsafe environment for students. On the homepage of the school district website is the following: "Students of the Union-Scioto Local School District will achieve and succeed in a safe and drug free environment." How can a student be safe, or feel secure, when their classmates are violently attacked??

DEMAND that the school district immediately alter their policy to reflect equal rights for all students including those who may be part of the GLBTQ community or are wrongly targeted for their perceived status. Ask the school to address issues of safety, violence, hatred and intolerance within their system.

The state of Ohio is currently considering a bill that would add these to the list of protections against bullying. Ask that Ohio legislators pass the bill (Ohio House Bill 208) and create the safe environment the school district promises their students.

The school district can be contacted via e-mail:
Superintendent Dwight Garrett - dgarrett@mail.gsn.k12.oh.us
High School Principal James Osborne - josborne@mail.gsn.k12.oh.us

Phone Calls:
High School - (740) 773-4105
Administration Office - (740) 773-4102

E-MAIL them and encourage them to change the school policy and teach students tolerance. CALL them and ask them to protect students and encourage a safe learning environment for all their students.

The web page also contains the words: "A student is not just a statistic. He or she is a flesh and blood human being with feelings and emotions." - DO NOT LET THE (unidentified) VICTIM OF THIS ASSAULT BECOME ANOTHER STATISTIC!!

I'm sending an official letter (both email and paper) to the school board. At this time, criminal charges pending which is a right step - but the school still needs to recognize and address the deeper issues of bullying and violence.

I'd link to especially thank the locals from the Ohio area who signed the petition to help make sure that one day the youth of their communities are safe. And of course thank you all from everywhere who signed the petition as well.

Keep active in your communities - the best way to fight homophobia and violence is to spread the word and teach tolerance, understanding and compassion!!

    3. Great News - criminal charges filed against attacker!!

http://www.towleroad.com/2011/11/levisever.html Towleroad reports today that the teenager responsible for the vicious assualt has been charged with, assault.

      It's a good start!!

    4. Thanks for your support.... the news has died down for now...

Perhaps the school district will reconsider their course of action and do the right thing.

My only concern in signing this is that it's listed as a gay rights petition. This is really not about gay rights. It's a human rights issue. Intolerance for gays is absolutely a factor in this case, but a simple lack of humanity is the root cause. _Nobody_ should be subject to this. Anything larger than a hornet should be treated with some decency.

As one who has been an educator for 30 years I am appalled that you have basically turned a blind eye to a premeditated assault because the victim was gay. Any child or adult within your school, community, state deserves full protection from violence. This assault ought to be prosecuted as a crime and the staff and witnesses and principal all charged with abetting and condoning this violence. It is appalling. What does your school board do? They are culpable as well. Fire that principal, teachers who knew, bounce those kids who did nothing to intercede and incarcerate that boy. Let him be sued for the damage he inflicted on the gay child and do your jobs. Protect those kids! Sincerely, Dr. V. A. Worthy

Disturbing, Gut wrenching, heartbreaking, sad, infuriating, sickening, and just down right appalling are just a few words used to describe the vicious and malicious attack. Hi, my name is Casandra, and the young man that all of you have seen being brutally beaten in this Union-Scioto attack is my nephew. He is 15years old and has been avidly discriminated against for years for being homosexual. Every time I even think of this video or the attack I want to vomit. Our family can not even begin to express the magnitude of our appreciation for the support we have received on so many avenues. He, is staying strong and positive. His voice needs to be heard and through all of you and your support that is happening. This attack has changed his life for ever not only emotionally but mentally as well. Today I say to everyone don't be afraid to be who you are, god made you the way you are and just like Lady Gaga says " I was born this way" each and everyone of us were born to be who we are. Again I say the support that we have received for all of you is more than any family could have dreamed of Thank you all from the deepest part of our hearts.
