Revoke Mayor Bloomberg's Invitation to Speak at UNC's Spring Commencement

    1. Petition by

      Alanna Davis

      Carrboro, NC

New York’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg represents the oppressive nature of the intersection of capital wealth and government that the Occupy movement is rejecting. Bloomberg has directly chosen to silence his constituents by dismantling the encampment at Zuccotti Park. Bloomberg should not convey the parting words of advice for students graduating from UNC. The commencement speaker should represent and embody the values of UNC’s mission to “improve society” which we interpret to mean building a more equitable, democratic, and community-rich world.

We, the undersigned, are UNC students, faculty, staff and concerned citizens who urge the Chancellor Thorp and the Commencement Committee to act now to revoke Michael Bloomberg’s invitation to speak at UNC’s Commencement Ceremony on May 13, 2012.

Yale expressed outrage toward Mayor Bloomberg's targeting of Muslim student groups. As academic institutions it is really important to "hang together" on these issues of injustice.

As a recent UNC graduate - and particularly as one who is appalled by Bloomberg's cavalier attitude towards the surveillance of America's Muslim university students - I urge the university administration to reconsider its choice of Michael Bloomberg for 2012's commencement.

The speaker at the graduation ceremonies needs to be a role model and igniter of the greatest possibilities for our young people. Michael Bloomberg's actions do not exemplify either. Time to reboot the selection process!

What message of hope or encouragement could you imagine Bloomberg could bring to nice young people from NC? He wouldn't dare speak on any campus of the City University of NY. This is some fat cat living in the dim past, or in his gilded cage.
