UK Athletics: Support a team to attend the World University Games

UK Athletics have decided not to support BUCS in sending a team to the 2013 World University Games. This means that although BUCS will be sending a team to the games, Athletics will not be included.

Athletes at University should be given the opportunity to represent their country if they achieve the required standards. Whilst there are other competitions that provide opportunities for athletes to compte for Great Britain we believe that the World University Games should be another opportunity for Athletes to represent Great Britain. In addition this competition provides athletes who are ineligible to compete in either the U20 or U23 competitions experience of an international sports event.

Students Petition For Athletic Representation At World Student Games

"Representing your country at any level is an honour and it should not be denied to the athletes with the opportunity to do so," are the words of former Bath University Athletics Captain and current Cardiff Metropolitan (formerly UWIC) student Chris Wakeford, who is reacting to UK Athletics' (UKA) decision to not send a Great Britain athletics team to the World University Games this summer in Kazan.

    5. UKA Official Statement

UKA have released a statement: "UKA have decided not to send a team to the 2013 World University Games (WUGS) as it clashes with the WU18s, EU23s and EU20s and UKA consider these more appropriate competitions for these age groups. UKA will take a decision on the 2015 WUGs when we have seen the competition calendar for that year."

They fail to consider athletes who are not U23 but are eligible to compete in the World Student Games. Hopefully with your support we can make them reconsider their decision.

All sports require competition to improve. All the hard work spent leading into the Olympics and all the Diamond league etc. type meets cannot go to waste. Give all sportspeople the opportunity to shine for GB.

Bucs bronze medalist in long jump, aged 24, coming into my own this season. Currently ranked 9th in the UK. Have the moral courage, respect for our student athletes and the integrity to send a team to represent all that is great about Britain.

I currently comepete in athletics and have done so for the psat 5 years and the standard of at the athletes at the universities are some of the top athletes in the country, so why shouldnt they still get a chance to compete for the country in university comeptitions. you see other countries getting support from governing bodies like america and its appalling that our governing body after the sucess of the olympics doesnt want to help send a team to the world university championships, even though other sports bodies in BUCS are sending teams,
