Stop Supporting Abuser Aharon Friedman

Rep Camp's senior advisor, Aharon Friedman, has been abusing his wife for nearly FOUR YEARS by refusing to grant her a Get (Jewish divorce), thus, effectively refusing to divorce her.

As a representative of the US government, it is his responsibility and within his power to take a stand against abuse by condemning Aharon's abusive behavior.

It is important to note that even if one feels that the custody arrangement is unfair to the father, Aharon, he can use legal means to deal with the issue.

Tamar, however, cannot use legal means to receive a get. She is chained to this man against her will.

By refusing to condemn Friedman, in fact,  dismissing criticism of Friedman's behavior as "gossip", Dave Camp is by default supporting abusive behavior.

We aren't asking Dave Camp to fire Aharon Friedman. All we want is for Camp to  stand firmly against this abuse of women's rights by issuing a public statement condemning all forms of domestic abuse, including the refusal to issue a Get.

How the petition works: when YOU sign this petition, the petition letter is immediately sent to Camp's email address with YOUR signature on it. We intend to send out a hard copy of the petition letter with the names of all the signees on it at the end of our campaign.

Some background on the Epstein-Friedman case as written up in Politics Daily by Sarah Wildman:

"Friedman, 34, a congressional committee aide working for Rep. Dave Camp, a Michigan Republican, has refused to give Epstein a get, a Jewish writ of divorce.

Without a get, by Jewish Orthodox law, the 27-year-old Epstein is forever bound to her husband -- she is an agunah, a woman in chains, a "grass widow" in the eyes of the community. She may never marry, she may never have other children.

For women like Epstein it is almost as though they are dead. Indeed, they are in a kind of purgatory, until resolution is found. And for women whose quest for a get goes on for decades -- they are like the walking wounded."

Anyone concerned with Women's Rights should sign this petition.

A Seiruv a.k.a. Order of Contempt of Court in Jewish law has been issued against Aharon Friedman by the Union Of Orthodox Rabbis of the US and Canada, aka the Agudat Israel of the US and Canada. It can be viewed here.

The petition also has the support of many prominent Rabbis including Rabbi Avrohom Union, Dayan and Menahel, Beth Din of the Rabbinical Council of California, Rabbi Yitzchak Adlerstein, Director of Interfaith Affairs at the Simon Wiesenthal Center, and Rabbi Jeremy Stern, of ORA (Organization for the Resolution of Agunot)

      Dear Friends,
THANK YOU for signing the petition fighting for Tamar's right to receive a get!
We have altered the text of the petition since the initial draft, and I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.
Just to clear up any confusion, the text of the petition at the time that YOU signed it is the text of the petition that was sent to Camp's email address with YOUR signature on it. Change.org sends an instantaneous email of the letter to the designee (in this case, Rep. Camp) every time the petition is signed.
We would like to change the wording of the petition one last time to ask Representative Camp to issue a public statement condemning Aharon Friedman for withholding the get, which we consider a more feasible objective than Camp threatening to dismiss Friedman for his abuse.
Please look it over, and if you would like your signature removed from the hard copy of the final draft which we intend to send Camp's office, please let me know at [email protected]

Since I believe a man refusing his wife a 'Get' is blatant domestic abuse.

Aharon Friedman needs to stop his abusive behavior by agreeing to a Get so he and Tamar Epstein can both move on with their lives. I support this endeavor with the hope of seeing Tamar free to remarry and live a normal life.
