Victory

Allison Keisman: Great news and great job to everyone!!! The BOE voted 6-1 in favor of 5 Day, Full Day Kindergarten to start the fall in 2013-2014 school year. Everyone voted in favor of the change, except for Mark Mathias. I'm thrilled that the BOE supported the school administrators' proposal and are giving both the teachers and students the added time needed to succeed under the Common Core Standards. Our incoming kindergarteners and future kindergarteners are the winners!!! Thank you to everyone on this list who collectively made a difference! I really appreciate everyone's hard work and support! Your voice counted! Best, Allison Keisman

We encourage any Westport residents to sign this petition!

The Westport Board of Education will be meeting TOMORROW, MONDAY, APRIL 8 at 7:30pm Cafeteria B, Staples H.S.

This is your last opportunity to speak out before the BOE votes on Full Day Kindergarten tomorrow night. Your voice counts! They need to see new faces so please come out and show your support for the school administrators' proposal in favor of Full Day K!

Hopefully, our incoming and future kindergarteners will FINALLY WIN Full Day Kindergarten!

Why you should SHOW YOUR SUPPORT for 5 DAY FULL DAY KINDERGARTEN and SIGN THIS PETITION:

NEW REALITY WITH THE COMMON CORE STANDARDS
We are dealing with a new reality and national effort to improve our educational system with the Common Core Standards. The state of CT along with 45 other states will be fully implementing the Common Core Standards. Westport will be implementing K-12 curriculum changes by 2014. These rigorous standards are to improve the quality of education across the country and better prepare students for future success.

KINDERGARTNERS WILL FACE THE SAME STANDARDS WHETHER THEY HAVE ACCESS TO FULL DAY OR NOT
Under the Common Core State Standards, kindergartners will be challenged with a rigorous curriculum with new and higher expectations than before. These same standards apply for all kindergartners whether or not you have access to full day or half- day kindergarten.

WESTPORT DOESN’T OFFER FIVE DAY FULL DAY KINDERGARTEN. HOWEVER, WESTPORT BENCHMARKS ITSELF AGAINST DISTRICTS THAT HAVE ALL SWITCHED TO FIVE DAY K EXCEPT FOR WILTON, WHICH IS CURRENTLY UNDER REVIEW
Westport currently offers a kindergarten program with Monday, Friday extended days (2 hours less each day) and three full days (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday). The Common Core is required and Westport will not be able to opt out of the curriculum change.

TEACHERS WILL BE PRESSURED TO COVER THE SAME MATERIAL IN LESS TIME AND CUT OUT CERTAIN ACTIVITIES COMPARED TO STUDENTS IN FULL DAY KINDERGARTEN
With the current Kindergarten curriculum, teachers will have the added pressure to cover the same material in less time or a narrower curriculum and may have to cut activities compared to districts already offering five day K.

STUDENTS WON’T HAVE THE EQUAL OPPORTUNITY COMPARED TO STUDENTS WITH FULL DAY K
Students will have less experimentation, exploration and enjoy fewer opportunities for play or other developmentally appropriate activities in place of instructional time to meet these standards. Westport kindergarteners won’t be given the same opportunity as students in full day K that could reduce their chances of success entering 1st grade and beyond.

WESTPORT SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS RECOMMEND CHANGES TO BETTER PREPARE OUR STUDENTS AND PROVIDE EQUAL OPPORTUNITY WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF FIVE DAY KINDERGARTEN
After extensive research on the benefits of full day K, benchmarking against similar districts and with the new Common Core Standards, the Westport elementary school administrators recognize the need for curriculum improvements and implementation of best practices to better prepare kindergartners for success under these new standards. They are recommending to the Board of Education to add more instructional minutes at the elementary school level for a more balanced, consistent curriculum with enough time to implement the Common Core curriculum without sacrificing other fun, developmentally appropriate activities or rest time in their school day. These administrators believe kindergarteners may be at a major disadvantage entering 1st grade and beyond if these changes are not implemented for the coming school year.

AS PARENTS, WHY WOULDN’T WE WANT TO SUPPORT OUR ADMINISTRATORS WHEN THEY HAVE OUR KIDS’ BEST INTEREST IN MIND?

PARENTS NEED TO SHOW THE BOARD OF EDUCATION THAT THEY SUPPORT THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS RECOMMENDATIONS WITH EVOLVING TO FIVE DAY KINDERGARTEN
As parents, we need to support the professionals that we trust and rely on to educate our kids and make the best decisions for them. They've done extensive research on why this change is necessary and it needs to pass now. The school administrators and parents need to be aligned with the same goal to improve our kids’ education under the Common Core Standards in order to provide a balanced, consistent curriculum, best quality education with equal opportunity and prepare our kids for the best chances of future success.

WHATEVER YOUR VIEW HAS BEEN ON THIS ISSUE IN THE PAST, PLEASE RE-EVALUATE THIS ISSUE ON THE NEED TO BETTER PREPARE KINDERGARTENERS FOR FUTURE SUCCESS AND PROVIDE EQUAL OPPORTUNITY UNDER THE COMMON CORE STANDARDS.

I am signing for one reason. Given they adopted the core curriciulum, many children will not have enough playtime DURING the school day if we do not adopt five full day. Teachers will be pressed to fulfill their requirements and in school playtime could get sacrificed. Many children need choice time during the day to be able to refocus and learn. Please get rid of K spanish. Please! .
