In the last several days, the president of Chick-fil-A, Dan Cathy, reaffirmed the company's anti-gay marriage stance and their allocation of funds to support organizations countering the marriage equality movement.
The University of Kansas Values Mission reads,
"The university is committed to excellence. It fosters a multicultural environment in which the dignity and rights of the individual are respected."
Chancellor Bernadette Grey-Little's statement on diversity reads,
"Everyone at KU plays a role in creating an inclusive environment. Mutual respect, mutual trust, and collegiality are the bonds of the relationships we seek; they are essential components to our standards of excellence."
KU Provost, Jeffery Vitter's statement on diversity reads,
"What makes KU great is its people. I’m delighted to have the opportunity to join the KU community—one grounded on valuing each individual’s worth and dignity. An important component of that value system is advocacy for diversity and inclusion; it is a major responsibility entrusted to all campus community members."
Because Chick-fil-A's stance on gay rights could create a hostile environment for queer individuals and allies, having a Chick-fil-A on campus deeply conflicts with The University of Kansas Mission on Values and the Chancellor's and Provost's personal commitments to diversity at KU.
This petition calls for the removal of Chick-fil-A from KU Memorial Unions Dining Services (The Underground). As the Provost said, it is our responsibility to ensure diversity and inclusion at The University of Kansas.
