Any well-educated person should know how to swim, particularly since the University of Chicago is situated on the banks of Lake Michigan. As alumni of the University of Chicago, we ask that the University bring back this requirement for graduation.

2 reason...any well educated person should know how to swim and the University of Chicago is located on a lake. A student died this week by drowning. I am not aware if he took/passed/needed to pass the swim test, but this shows you why all Chicago students should have swimming proficiency.

Public safety and essential to being well rounded. (Ok, was on the UofC swim and polo teams)

It is important because swimming is something all people should know how to do. And if you take continuing education, it should be required.

The University of Chicago has always been, in my mind, a place that set its own tone, for its own reasons. I remember it as a special place, not entirely and always in the best sense, but that feeling was what made me persevere through personal issues to the fulfillment of a degree. Dropping the swimming and physical fitness requirements seems the mark of a follower, not a leader.

We all value the life of the mind, but any Maroon who knows Aristotle knows that we should value physical education as well.
