(Modified from Original by Tim Silver:

On June 18th, around 4:30 am, renowned investigative journalist Michael Hastings died after his car lost control, was witnessed to have exploded and burst into flames, then colliding with a tree in the center median of a 4 lane highway. The FBI has forbid any emergency agencies (Police, Fire, EMS) from discussing any aspect of the event. Michael Hastings did not drink, and there is no toxicology report, nor can there be one (his body was immediately cremated without his family's consent.

Immediately, suspicious details regarding the crash began emerging. I will compile them here and update this as they emerge.

Wikileaks revealed that their lawyer, Jennifer Robinson, was contacted by Hastings just hours before his death claiming that he was being investigated by the FBI.

Hastings sent an email to colleagues hours before his death stating:

re:NSA... I'm onto a big story and need to go off the radar for a bit.

One eyewitness described the crash as such: "The Car Was Bouncing, Flames and Sparks Near the Gas Tank. When He Hit the Palm Tree That's When the Flames Were Higher. There Were Explosions and Everything... No One Could Approach the Car Because it Kept Exploding."

The accident only involved Hastings car, no other vehicles.

Police, Firefighters and EMS have been told not to comment on the investigation

Another witness described the scene: "It sounded like a bomb went off." "My house shook, the windows were rattling."

LAPD will not release a police report

Former marine friend told media that Hasting's was threatened: "We will hunt you down and kill you" for McChrystal reporting

Hastings was driving a new Mercedes C-250, a car not prone to bursting into flames before a crash.

Hastings had worked on numerous articles critical of US government foreign and domestic policy, including: The Rise of the Killer Drones: How America Goes to War in Secret, Julian Assange: The Rolling Stone Interview, Another Runaway General: Army Deploys Psy-Ops on U.S. Senators, America's Last Prisoner of War.

One of Hastings articles had resulted in the forced resignation of General McChrystal.

The Mercedes' drive train was about 50-60 yards away from the crash site.

Hastings had said in a 2012 Reddit AMA (Ask me Anything community Q&A with an audience of millions of people) that he received numerous death threats.

When he died, Hastings was working on a story regarding current CIA director Brennan.

No brake/skid marks

Some of his work was probing the CIA

Hastings was Cremated, even though his family never requested it.

Wife has hired a private investigator

Michael Hasting had not had a drink in 5 years

It might also be important to note that DARPA has allowed for the ability to hack cars, and the new Mercedes in question can be controlled remotely.

The UN doesn't have an investigative body for conducting a criminal investigation of mysterious-circumstance accidents.

The United States government does not like to have foreign investigations of U.S. troops, or official bodies, and unlike every other government in the world, carves out treaty-exceptions for itself, so asking the UN to investigate isn't going to work. Period.

Even in Europe (where such supra-national authority *does* exist) one has to exhaust domestic remedies. For U.S. problems, domestic remedies (U.S. courts and administrative procedures) are the only option.

U.S. domestic entities that can investigate are the DOD Inspectors General, Military Criminal Investigative Services (such as NCIS). The Congressional Committees can also investigate. You should petition the SSCI (Feinstein) or HSPCI (Peter King); also the House and Senate Armed Services Committees.

Unfortunately, if the above U.S. entities run an investigation, they'll do it in secret and they'll fire people and tell no one. And that's a best-case scenario, i.e. chances are they won't investigate at all.

You are best-off suing for FOIA records, and that's already being done by Jason Leopold, of Al-Jazeera America. Follow that effort. It's the only viable option under U.S. law, in it's current state.
