Stop the $10 million cut to the McNair Scholar Program

    1. Petition by

      Fran Walker

      Syracuse, NY

The McNair scholars program is designed to help disadvantaged, majority first generation, and underrepresented students pursue graduate education. The program works to build research and professional development skills. It also helps students learn to focus and get the most of a graduate education while still contributing to the community. This cut will result in the closing of roughly 30% of all McNair programs in the country and will mean that hundreds of promising McNair scholars will suddenly be left on their own, and thousands more will never get the chance to prove what they have to offer. With the steady decline of the U.S. educational system we cannot afford to let those who have come through so much fall through the cracks. Those bursting with potential must have resources to reach it, and contribute to reversing this trend of declining education.

There are so few opportunities to reach the underrepresented and give them a chance for education that I don't want to see one taken away.

I am a Ronald E. McNair Scholar. I come from a low income family and I was the first in my family to attend college. I have been to 4 internships at universities across the U.S and presented research at more than 25 national conferences. I will also be the first in my family to attend Graduate School. Without the McNair program's support I would have missed several opportunities to advance academically and professionally. The McNair program changes lives. I am proof of that.

Education is the single most important thing to me as a tax payer. Start cutting military spending or government employee salaries before you even think about touching education. Enough is enough. I am tired of my government's dismantling of the education system. We need more intelligent well-trained Americans. Have any of our elected officials read,"Rising Above the Gathering Storm:
