Denounce “joke” made of violence; apologise for not responding; state statistics; commit to sensitivity training, conflict resolution in school curriculum, and anti-violence campaign

    1. Petition by

      BASV&CA

Following the comments made by MP for Tall Pines Leslie Miller in the House of Assembly on February 20, 2014 and the response (or lack thereof) by those present, we find this course of action necessary to:

  • Inform the public of the pervasive and harmful effects of domestic violence in The Bahamas
  • Sensitize the public to the issue of domestic violence in The Bahamas
  • Ensure every student leaving the school system from 2015 onward is trained to safely and appropriately resolve conflicts by de-escalation and non-violent measures

Silence in the face of such behaviour where violence against women is made material for humour is condemnable but to join in the deplorable laughter is worse. These people represent a people and youth strive to be like and emulate them, this is not the example they should be witnessing

There is so little done to teach conflict resolution at all levels. Anger can be such a powerful emotion that presents danger when it is not controlled. Let's hope this petition has a over all positive affect on decisions maker moving forward towards bringing peace in the lives of potential victims of violence.
