Since the inception of Father Richard Vega, merely 5 months ago, to the role of Pastor for St. Frances of Rome Parish and St. Frances of Rome School; a number of changes have been enacted that are not condusive to the environmental and financial health of our Parish and School.
Father Vega has used-up all of the previously existing funds of the Parish's Building Fund to renovate and furnish his living quarters. A detailed list of "neccasary" items was publicized via the Parish bulletin on 10/07/12 and 10/14/12. This list was put together by Fr. Vega as a "wish-list" ,for parishioners, of items still pending to be purchased after the Building Fund had been exhausted. The following is a list of but a few of the items he was requesting as they were listed in the bulletin:
Floor Lamp $250-$300
Buffet Hutch $3,000
Service for 12, real Silver flat-ware
Service for 12, Wine glass-ware
2 leather couches
California King bedroom furniture
2 wing back chairs
Dining table $2,500
10 dining chairs $1,540
Chimney cleaning $3,000
New air conditioning unit $8,500
The list goes on to mention another 70+ items. All of these to be purchased to make the Rectory (priest quarters) "livable". I have failed to mention that these quarters had been habituated and in use by other priests up until the arrival of Fr. Vega. Therefore, furnishings and all living necessities were already in place upon his arrival. These lavish and unneccasry expenses are not consistent with the humble teachings of Jesus and takes away vital monies that can be put forth for the needs of many and the parish school.
In addition, under Fr. Vega's leadership, we have seen a number of staff resign. Of the latest is our School Principal that had been with St. Frances of Rome School for 10 years. This latest has caused an uproar amongst parents who have written numerous letters to the Department of Catholic Schools, Fr. Vega, and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Under the leadership of this principal, St. Frances of Rome School had thrived despite not being provided any financial support from the Parish collections or funds. In the Principal's absense, Fr. Vega has merged the School's finances with his Parish finances and has placed Parish Staff in charge of a School environment which neccesitates the expertise and knowledge of an education professional; One who is familiar with emergency procedures, policies, and curriculum.
School parents had previously been disillusioned when Fr. Vega announced that he was discontinug the participation of parish school children within mass. Mass for the parish children was changed to a "prayer service" which is consistently canceled or rescheduled, thereby failing to provide parish children with exposure to the word of god.
These are the prevailing reasons that we ask that Fr. Vega be immediately removed from St. Frances of Rome.
We would like to bring a stop to the dramatic rate of atrition that we are witnessing amongst staff, parishioners, and now School parents; before it is too late.
